This last week, our Choteau County Library threw a get together for all the children in our community who have read a thousand books. Libraries across the county are trying to get young children to start reading early, by making it a challenge to read a thousand books before kindergarten. It's easy to register, and its fun for parents and their kids. 1,000 books may seem like quite a number, but did you know that if you read a book every night for the next three years, you will have read 1,095...
On February 16th, the annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner was held at the Montana Agriculture Center in Fort Benton. The event began at 12:30 in the afternoon, and almost every Republican candidate was there. This year they served appetizers at a buffet table instead of the usual dinner. Many people came and enjoyed the speeches, along with getting to know our Republican candidates. The State Representative and the State Senator opened with short but well-thought-out speeches. Afterward, the first of...
Last Tuesday, January 21, the Big Sandy School Board had its monthly meeting. The meeting began with the usual Pledge of Allegiance and the approval of minutes. Melanie Schwarzbach began with the meeting with a report from the MHSA Annual Meeting. Included in that report were some interesting changes that may be occurring over the next school year concerning athletics in Big Sandy. Starting next year, shooting shirts for the basketball team may be purchased by an organization as long as it is equitable to the other Big Sandy teams. Along with...

This year's High school Christmas Concert was beautiful and filled with some fantastic talents. The whole choir was dressed in silky, purple robes with white trim. They all looked quite lovely. It began with an opening processional. They entered the auditorium in pairs, walking down the two aisles singing a mix of classical Christmas music. The introducing song was Christmas Bells Are Ringing. The second song was Silent Night. It was accompanied by sign language from the whole choir. Let There...
I want to start by congratulating Erin Taylor on becoming a violinist for the Great Falls Youth Orchestra. Erin is a senior at Big Sandy Highschool, where she is involved in sports, music, and the FFA. She grew up with three brothers, one younger and two older. They resided in Dillon, where Erin had the opportunity to join the Junior Fiddlers, a group of young musicians that plays old tunes on old fiddles. The Junior Fiddlers is a great chance to get together with other musicians who have the...

The Prize for all for winners is going to be one free milkshake from the Grocery Store each. Stop in, grab a picture, color it, and bring it back. Good Luck! The library is going to be opened from 10 am to 2 pm during the Christmas Stroll. A book sale is also taking place this December. The library had many books donated to be sold; the price will be $1 a ba...
November 22nd and 23rd, the high school hosted its annual play. The auditorium was absolutely packed with friends and familiar faces, along with folks I've never met. It turned out to be quite the production! Hard work from everyone and great acting made this modern twist of " The Christmas Carol" an absolute gem. I don't know if I have ever appreciated theater as much as I did Friday and Saturday night. This play takes place during Christmas, in a Suessified setting. The four young narrators...
Congratulations to the choir of Big Sandy for being chosen to represent the small towns in Montana on PBS, national television. What a fantastic group of students and teachers we have! Amanda Robertson said, “The students in Big Sandy have been great to work with, and I am so excited that the choir has the opportunity to perform and record for PBS. I’m not sure what the nomination process was or who nominated the choir, but the students should be very proud to represent our town of Big Sandy and our state of Montana. There’s a lot of talen...
Every Halloween for the past four years, Patti Pegar has used her food truck to give out corn dogs to the community. It has become a tradition between her and her husband, Don Pegar. The first year in 2014, they gave out hot dogs, and every year after, it’s been corn dogs. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community. “Giving something to kids and parents who may live out of town, making it easier to enjoy the night of spooky festivities and not have to worry about dinner,” Patti said. They spend as much on the corn dogs...
St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church held its annual Harvest Dinner this Sunday, October 27th. With fantastic food and lots of people, it sure is quite the event. This dinner has been going on for 50+ years, and it’s a great way to get the community together for the holiday season. This dinner was held from 11 am to 2 pm for everyone to come and fellowship with others. They served classic turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy, some delicious salads, and homemade desserts. The food was incredible and made me feel like Thanksgiving is just around t...
The volleyball games last Thursday and Friday, October 24th and 25th, were lost to the CJI (Chester-Joplin-Inverness) Lady Hawks and The Boxelder Lady Bears, but not without a fight. These were the final home games for our teams. Both teams each night wore Bright pink ribbons in their hair for National Breast Cancer Awareness...
There was good attendance at this month's school board meeting. All the trustees were there, along with representatives from the student council and booster club. The student council has been working hard to improve and help the students wherever they can. They said spirit week had a fantastic turnout. It is always nice to see our school come together to celebrate traditions and each other. Their Halloween plans consist of dinner and a movie on October 29th, 2019. Since volleyball districts...
TJ Allderdice has taken an interest in a career with Fish and Game. Since Big Sandy is located close to the river, our community has a lot to do with wildlife and the laws that protect it. To begin his career, Tj is interning at a hunting checkpoint. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for a career in wildlife. A hunting checkpoint is crucial, primarily because of the spread of Chronic Waste Disease (CWD). Chronic Waste Disease is a neurological disease that occurs in deer, elk, and sometimes moose. It is contagious but only through...

On September 17th, 2019, I got the honor of reporting on the school board meeting at the high school. I got to see some familiar people, along with with meet some new folks. Kelly Rutledge, Maryetta Engle, Darin Genereux, Kelly Holland, and Brad Weaver were all the attendees at the meeting this month. The student council, as usual, had some great ideas. They discussed themes for the upcoming Chili Feed and Spirit Week. The themes have not yet been decided, but I am excited to see the final theme. Events like these are essential because they...
