  • Fort Assinniboine Dr. experiences 55 below zero- Malta 1880

    Robert Lucke|Apr 13, 2016

The following article about Fort Assinniboine as seen through the eyes of Dr. John Carroll was written for “The Mountaineer” in 1930. Dr. Carroll was slated to go on an adventure to the North Pole during his tenure at Fort Assinniboine but did not go. The article was given “The Mountaineer” by Midge Edwards. Why coal banks are not capitalized in the story remains a mystery. It was 51 years ago, June 17, 1879 that Dr. John V. Carroll, now a resident of Great Falls but at that time a private soldier in the 18th United States Infantry, stepped...

  • Helen Richter: "5 churches/5 bars/ Let's give it a week"

    Robert Lucke|Apr 6, 2016

Helen Richter is retiring from the Big Sandy Medical Center on April 15. If you see her around town be sure to wish her well. Helen's story is interesting. She came from England in 1947 along with her girl friend from Scotland to seek their fortunes as Registered Nurses in the United States. They spent their first night in the United States in Times Square in New York. The two of them saw an add in their British Nursing Journal for Two Registered Nurses needed in a hospital in Big Sandy,...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Apr 6, 2016

I cooked a ham for Easter and even though it got overdone, I made two casseroles with the leftovers that really turned out well and the over dry ham when it went swimming in the sauces turned out very moist! The first recipe was one my mother made with leftover ham. You will need: 2 cups of cubed ham 1 dollop of yellow mustard 1 onion chopped Butter or oil to sauté in Any leftover glaze sauce Any leftover pineapple slices and cherries Brown sugar to taste Salt and pepper to taste Sauté the chopped onion and the ham in a frying pan. When browned...

    Robert Lucke|Mar 30, 2016

It is called a Young Producer Conference but it should be a great conference for agriculture producers of all ages. Put on by the Montana Farmers Union, the conference will be held at the Best Western Plus, April 1st and 2nd in Havre. Big Sandy farmer Alan Merrill, president of the Montana Farmers Union said there will be something for everyone interested in agriculture at that conference. • Jim Kipp Lookout: A Missouri treasure

    Robert Lucke|Mar 30, 2016

By Robert Lucke I have long wondered if the Jim Kipp Lookout sign we put up on a bluff above Cow Island on the Missouri River in August of 1957 is still there. I got the brilliant idea one Saturday morning to see if there was any mention of the sign and lookout on the internet. I looked and there were several stories about the sign. That was the good news. Bad news was that the stories were all by me. So, I was as much in the dark as ever. I recently discovered some pictures of that event. One...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Mar 30, 2016

This is the time to take a hike or stroll through your favorite part of the Bear Paw Mountains. First, the creeks are running maybe as good as they might be running most of the year so get on out and enjoy them. In the bird department there are blue birds around, lots of robins, chickadees singing their spring door bell song, and even loons coming and going on Beaver Creek Reservoir at the north end of Beaver Creek Park. In the flower department look for pasque flowers or as we call them around here, crocuses. They are out as are buttercups...

  • Sky Pilot for the Methodists

    Robert Lucke|Mar 23, 2016

Since last August Sharon Robertson has been the sky pilot for the Methodists in the Big Sandy area. Robertson is a very good fit for Methodists in this area since she has been attending the church since she was a freshman in high school. Not many ministers go that far back with the church they shepherd. "I think we are all coming around," said Robertson. "I never know what everyone else thinks but I think things are going well." Even though Sharon has lived in the Big Sandy area all of her...

  • Easter Cook: Donna Jenkins

    Robert Lucke|Mar 23, 2016

It is always good to honor a great cook at Easter for part of Easter is a big Easter dinner that has to be cooked by someone and that someone is usually a very good cook. Big Sandy is filled with many great cooks. "The Mountaineer" has done feature after feature of the cadre of cooks that surround us here. Whether it is Linda Schwarzbach's Swedish Meatballs for the school, or Josh Danreuther's pizza or Tammy Houle's famous prime rib, this town is filled with people who love to put wonderful...

  • From The Mayor's Desk

    Robert Lucke|Mar 23, 2016

Mayor Stiles reported that the regular City Council meeting held March 9 had six visitors and after the Pledge was recited there were no public comments. In the Sheriff’s Report a couple of people have been picked up that were a part of the chainsaw incident last summer. One more is still at large. Regarding the Wastewater Project there was a discussion about how grass was going to get planted around the sewage lagoon. It is still not clear to the Mayor or Council just how that is going to be taken care of. The Mayor got an email from the c...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Mar 23, 2016

For me Easter is all about the music. It always has been. For years in the old Van Orsdel Methodist Church I thought I had died and gone to heaven when Pearl Ann Houtz sang “Jerusalem” each Easter. That is until just a few years ago I heard Tom Bede sing that same song and he all but knocked the walls off the sanctuary. At Easter I play Handel’s Messiah on the boom box each chance I get and it is wonderful. On my computer I have one of those trick scenes where a food court is all eating food until almost one at a time they break into song,...

  • Bee Lucke and the Easter Caper

    Robert Lucke|Mar 23, 2016

One year way back in the early 1950’s, it was a winter much like the one we have just finished experiencing in 2016. There was little snow in the Bear Paw Mountains and roads to Clear Creek were open all winter long. This was unheard of for Bee Lucke and C. L. Stuart who, had they had their way, would have spent every weekend all winter long at their current fishing shack. However, their wives put a stop to that. After all it was winter that Bee and C. L. got all their projects done around their Havre homes so they could spend the summer out o...

  • Calving season never better in Big Sandy area

    Robert Lucke|Mar 16, 2016

"The Mountaineer" took telephone in hand last week and called some area cattle ranchers to find out how calving was going. Here are some of those interviews. Last week when Marla Ray was in she said that calving was going well. She handles the night shift as it is easy for her to go back to sleep and besides she knows about when her cattle (most of which are named) are ready to calve and it usually isn't at night. This week husband Jim Ray said that the calving is going good. They have 25 on the...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Mar 16, 2016

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day and since I don’t get to go to Butte for the parade, my main way of celebrating this wonderful time is to eat plenty of corn beef and cabbage. However, since the holiday comes on a Thursday this year, I do not have time to cook my corn beef and cabbage until Friday. I was trying to think what I love most about that meal? Is it the beef with a brown sugar and mustard sauce for dunk at the table or is it the new potatoes and carrots? Neither I must admit. I like the wonderful green cabbage cooked in that corn bee...

This week Vicki picked “NYPD RED” 4 by James Patterson which is the story of an audacious heist, a shocking murder and a case that only “NYPD RED” can solve. It’s another glamorous night in the heart of Manhattan: at a glitzy movie premiere, a gorgeous starlet dressed to the nines and dripping in millions of dollars worth of jewelry on loan, makes her way past a horde of fans and Paparazzi. But then there is a sudden loud noise and an even louder scream and a vicious crime with millions of witnesses and no suspect---and now “NYPD RED” has a new...

Don't forget to treat yourself to having a great deal of fun this Saturday night by attending the Rotary Banquet. It all happens at the High School Gym with doors opening at 6pm on Saturday, March 12. "Wish Upon a Star" is the theme of the shindig and organizers say you won't have to wish upon a star to be in line for a great prime rib dinner, prizes galore and a time to share the Big Sandy community with others. Rhonda Works is the president of Rotary in Big Sandy. When asked what projects...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Mar 9, 2016

I have a very hard time realizing that stream fishing in the Bear Paw Mountains is open all year long these days. It used to be that the season did not start until around the third weekend in May. A friend was talking to me yesterday and told me that at the old Eagles Campground, which is the first large grove of Box Elder trees coming in to Beaver Creek Park from Havre; the fishing right now is great! It must be great not only there because when I drive through Beaver Creek Park; it is rare not to see a couple of fishermen from Bear Paw Lake...

  • What was your favorite? Top Ten 2016 Super Bowl Commercials

    Robert Lucke|Mar 2, 2016

Many people have said that Super Bowl Fifty was a fizzle from the teams playing, the actions of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, the Half Time Show and even the Super Bowl Commercials were mostly duds this year. In fact, only if you are a fan of the Denver Broncos did you have much to crow about in terms of this Super Bowl. In a word, it was anything but Super! However, there were commercials and they were rated as to the top ten in terms of television enjoyment. Here are the top ten commercials for 2016. Don’t feel bad if you don’t rem...
