It was quite a storm this last week. I know some people in the Bear Paw Mountains who are still stranded and wondering what to do about it. I was only snowbound once unless you count this last storm last week. And I was not snowbound in it really as friends could come and go and bring me all sorts of good things to eat and drink. The only time I really remember being snowbound is in the 1990’s when I was living in the old Faber house on Little Box Elder Creek. There one day just around Easter, it started to snow and by the next morning I had a...

Their whirlwind romance started when they were young college students and lasted nearly thirty years--until Elizabeth died of cancer. So when John Baxter is asked to relive his long-ago love story with Elizabeth for his grandson Cole’s heritage project, he is not sure he can do it. The sadness might simply be too great. Pioneer Pride in action. The Big Sandy Booster Club got a huge boost with a large number of Pioneers wanting to help out with Booster activities. The Booster Club rolls went from well under ten to over twenty and gains are being made even yet. The goals of the Booster Club are simple according to President Jeri Roth. They are to help students get excited about things to do in school whether they are athletic or academic. If there are places for science students to go to that are costly, Booster Club can help with those...
There is a new wave of Republicanism sweeping across Chouteau County. Gone are the Lincoln Day dinners traditionally held in Fort Benton. Instead the Republicans decided to have fun and move their main event for the year to Loma (half way between Fort Benton and Big Sandy), have it catered by Ma’s Café known for her Mexican treats and turn it into a Fall Festival of treats just to have fun and meet some new candidates for the United States Senate. According to Rick Jespersen the Community Hall in Loma is middle ground. It decorated easily an...
The regular Big Sandy City Council Meeting was held on September 7, 2017. After the welcome, the pledge was recited and minutes were approved from the last meeting. There was one visitor, no public comment and no sheriff’s report. The new water line project was discussed with Bear Paw Development. The Council is reviewing ways to bill people for water use more efficiently. In the process to change billing systems Big Sandy has held out for a long time but a new system would be more productive. The Council is still working on with Rural D...
I was so surprised to pick up a recent issue of “Bon Appétit” Magazine and find a picture of Spaghetti and Meatballs on the front cover. I had thought spaghetti and meatballs a much too plain food for that magazine and further, I knew of few people who thought that spaghetti and meatballs is as comforting as it is for me. They wrote what I had known for many years, “Last winter, my wife invited an old friend over for Sunday dinner. Craving something simple and homey, I suggested spaghetti and meatballs. Someone agreed, adding garlic bread...

I have always loved it when October rolls around. When I was a teacher and a hunter, I could hardly wait for the MEA Convention in October as that usually coincided with the first day of hunting season and maybe three other teachers and I would head from Glasgow, where we were teaching to Zortman or to Clear Creek where we would cook up all sorts of comfort food, drink a little whiskey or brandy and just enjoy two or three days of roughing it. If I recall there was never much hunting that went on. It was more just getting out of the groove and...

We wish these new teachers well and hope that they find living in Big Sandy is an adventure in good neighbors and dear hearts. Following are...
Well over a hundred people visited the Big Sandy Museum this summer and from the comments received around town, those people knew they had been somewhere and seen something. Our Big Sandy Museum may not be world class but it is certainly in an upper class when comparing it to other museums in Montana. Tina Rodewald is the Director of the museum. Traci Rodewald is the curator and Dale Morey is the volunteer who put in countless hours just for the love of the Museum and Big Sandy. There are new...
Almost everyone has a bucket list or wishes they would choose to do if they ever had a chance to do them. Years ago, some folks made their bucket lists into seasonal lists of things to do during that particular season. It is fall and we have even had a tad of fall like weather to prove it. My fall bucket list is probably similar to yours and maybe different as well. This fall bucket list is not in order of what to do first and so on. Rather it is just a series of suggestions about what fall has to offer that you might not have thought of. Fall...
Many years ago I wanted to become a teacher and had gathered enough credits at Northern Montana College to do that. Dr. Harrison Lane was my mentor for Student Teaching and he wanted me to do my Student Teaching with Lawrence Green in Big Sandy. He said the school system was simply wonderful as was Mr. Green. Lane was right on both counts! I went to Big Sandy and remember well teaching English to Big Sandy kids very interested in learning and I learned a lot from my brief stay with the Big Sandy schools. That was a wonderful school system. It...

Darlene Cline is the new librarian at the Jeff Reichelt Memorial Library in Big Sandy. She took over as head librarian on July 31. Darlene knows her way around the library as she helped out with story time at the library and when she was young and lived on a ranch outside of Bynum, she spent much time in the library just doing her homework. Darlene was raised in Bynum on a cattle ranch on the Rocky Mountain Front and she still misses those beautiful mountains to look at each day. She does not...
When the Bear Paw East Fork was raging a friend brought a lot of equipment to the Bear Paws to help fight the fire. He also brought his eight year old boy. That first hot, windy night, the friend was told to build a fire line for several miles with his bulldozer. His eight year old son got on a smaller bulldozer and to the amazement of everyone watching, took off after his dad to help with the fire line. They had portable radios and so at the home base, listeners heard things like the father say, “How are you doing buddy?” “Just fine Dad, my ga...
