This week Michael Connelly writes a new thriller called “THE CROSSING”. Detective Harry Bosch has retired from the LAPD but his half brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller, needs his help. A woman has been brutally murdered in her bed and all the evidence points to Haller’s client, a former gang member turned family man. Though the murder rap seems ironclad, Mickey is sure it is a setup. Bosch doesn’t want anything to do with crossing the aisle to work for the defense. He feels it will undo all the good his has done in his thirty years a...

A friend of mine loved to hunt and he loved most of all to hunt alone. Just his horse, his pack horse his tent, his gun and some food was good enough for him. What reminded me of this friend was that the October he went hunting in what is now the Bob Marshall but then was called just Big River, Montana had experienced a very hot, dry and smoky summer, much like what we are going through now. It was October when my friend set up his camp in the wilderness and proceeded to scout for an elk or even a large buck deer to take home. One day he had...

  • Traditionally Labor Day heralds a new Season

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

Labor Day was just last Monday. Traditionally it is the end of the glorious summer and picnic season. It is a time to go back to work, back to school and make plans for a winter season that is just around the corner. To honor Labor Day this year we include three of Doug Giebel's pictures of a picnic at the Sheepsheds on the IX ranch around 1918. What makes these pictures great is not just all the detail but the fact that they were pictures belonging to Dan Cushman, one of Montana's most famous...

  • Long teaches Spanish

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

Superintendent Moore calls Bridgette Long one seventh of a teacher. Bridgette is a new teacher at Big Sandy Junior High teaching Spanish. She teaches one period out of seven a day, hence one seventh of a teacher. Actually Superintendent Moore is very happy to have Bridgette as a foreign language teacher is needed in Montana schools and Bridgette fits the bill very well. Bridgette did not learn Spanish at Big Sandy High School where she graduated and went through all twelve grades. She went to...

  • Sperry Chalet burned Bear Paw Fire is looking better

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

There was big fire news on two fronts last week. The East Fork fire led by a wind from hell got out of containment and went every which way all week long. Monday, September 4 was the first time in over a week that there was not a smoke smell on the prairie and a person could see all the way to Baldy from US 87. The fire started on the Warrick road just before getting to the Dumas summer ranch. From there it went into reservation for a little way but mainly roared down Little Box Elder Creek. Seldom did the fire get west of Beaver Creek and it...

  • From The Mayor's Desk

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

The regular August City Council meeting was held on August 10th. The Pledge was recited, minutes were approved, there were no public comments and there was one visitor. There was no Sheriff’s report. Concerning the new water project, several calls have been made to Rural Development and it looks like it is funded and headed for a spring start up. Before that can happen there will have to be some public meetings to let people know what is happening. The Brown Field project which concerns the old Service Station in Big Sandy got some bad news w...

How about the most wonderful casserole I have ever eaten? My friends call it Sloppy Robby and it is the perfect way to start the fall season. Don’t make it while the weather is still hot. Make it when cool and you will love it even more. It is three parts. Let’s start with the top first. It is your favorite Sloppy Joe recipe or use this one. You will need two small cans of tomato paste, a pound and a half of hamburger, an onion diced, two packages of Sloppy Joe Mix and a couple cans of water along with a cup of good beef broth. Sauté the hamb...

  • Kulbeck honors prairie cemetery

    Robert Lucke and Vicki Kulbeck|Aug 30, 2017

Old cemeteries can tell a huge amount of history and are becoming more popular all the time to find out just who lived in what age and in many cases how they died as well. The cemetery at Hungry Hollow just east of Clear Creek is choked with lilacs and among those lilacs are names of children who died of influenza, and old timers who died after one might think they should. The cemeteries in Zortman and Landusky, one choked out with iris, the other in an old growth forest tell many stories. At...

  • Moses Mountain Bear Paw Fire

    Robert Lucke|Aug 30, 2017

Sunday, August 27 a fire burned several acres of the Bear Paw Mountains on Moses Mountain close to the Ova Sety Summer Place. The fire started just east of the East Fork Dam on the Rocky Boy Reservation close to the cattle guard by the Dumas summer place. The fire started right next to the Warrick/ Beaver Creek road and spread quickly to Moses Mountain and parts of the Sety summer ranch. It started at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. By 7am on Monday the fire was reported as contained. Volunteers along with several fire departments worked to get the...

  • Fire Season Update ever changing

    Robert Lucke|Aug 30, 2017

With September just around the corner, the fire season, heat and drought lingers on. It will be with us until the winter snows and let’s just hope that no big fires get started now and that we get a good snow early on to help put out what is raging. Actually it looks like things are a little better at the end of August. The horrible Lolo fire just south of Missoula seems to be getting more under control. Missoula residents said that last week they saw the peak of Mount Lolo for the first time in weeks. Some evacuations have been lifted in t...

If you pay property taxes you should be very glad you live in Chouteau County and Big Sandy specifically. As most property owners know, property taxes are going up this year due to the recent legislature taking funding away from education. By doing that I wonder if the legislature is telling us what they really think about education? Thank heavens we have a couple of good legislators representing us in Chouteau County. they wrote a column that “The Mountaineer” printed last week along with reasons taxes are going up written by Sup...

  • Crystal Geyer heads up Senior Center

    Robert Lucke|Aug 23, 2017

A couple of years ago "The Mountaineer" interviewed a new cook at the Senior Citizens Center. Her name was Crystal Geyer. When we did that interview we concluded that Crystal had been a wise choice as a cook. Her love of people, her getting along with staff and her love for cooking and food made her a natural in any kitchen. Unfortunately for the Senior Citizens Center Crystal took a job as an aide at the elementary school and her expertise was lost to Big Sandy seniors for a year. That was a...

Colby Baumgarn, president of the TV Club announced that they have just introduced a new channel, called the “Grit Channel”. It is a channel devoted exclusively to old and not so old western movies and sagas. If watching McClintock or Shane or The Hanging Tree or The Man who shot Liberty Valance or The Big Sky is your thing, you will see them all on “Grit”. By the way, The Hanging Tree and the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance were both written by Montana author Dorothy Johnson and The Big Sky was written by Montana author Bud Guthrie. Maybe you hav...

  • The Sprague Complex of fires in Glacier National Park expected remain the same until the snow falls

    Robert Lucke|Aug 23, 2017

The fire alert from Glacier National Park which is included here is included because Glacier officials say that the Sprague Complex of fires will remain the same or maybe grow a little until the snow falls at the beginning of winter. So, as you read through this report, chances are that the trails mentioned here will stay closed until the end of the summer season. If you are heading for Glacier soon, a good rule of thumb is to not go on any trails close to Sperry Chalet as they will probably be closed unless the weather changes drastically. Wes...

It might be said that Bert was a dandy. He dressed in a strange way, had a tiny moustache and drove around in a very large and long green Nash. Bert (and his last name will not be used to protect the innocent) worked in the shoe department of the Lou Lucke Company for many years. In fact one could say that Bert grew old selling shoes at the Lou Lucke Company. He wore black and white saddle shoes all summer long and even wore something that I think were called puttees and what had gone out of style in the 1920’s. Puttees were strips of cloth t...
