My son has recently asked me, “why do people say the expression ‘uncertain times’ when they talk?” I explained to him that we have a new normal...and we may never go back to the way it used to be. These “uncertain times” have everyone asking so many questions. I recently asked someone how their fitness journey was going, and their response was, “horrible because the school won’t let people in the community go to the gym.” Well, I thought this week’s article, we could talk about fitness and nutrition during these “uncertain times....
Let’s talk about clean eating. What is it? Is it beneficial? Or is it just a fad diet that will soon phase out? Clean eating is defined as consuming Whole Foods and avoiding processed foods and foods with preservatives, added sugars, and coloring. “Clean eating” became a fad diet in the U.S., really starting back in 2007 when a Canadian fitness model wrote a book talking about how she lost 75lbs just by eating “clean,” by taking processed foods out of her diet, mainly white flour and sugar. Now, just like any diet, there are pros and cons. The...
Stephanie Overbay accepted the 365-day challenge I want to take the time to give a shout-out to my friend Stephanie Overbay in this week's article. She's been on her journey by walking AT LEAST a mile every day for the last 345 days! She's committed to doing this for a full year! 365 days! And she's almost there! I asked her to answer a few questions for me. Question 1: Me: Why did you choose to do the challenge? Stephanie: I choose to do this challenge to help motivate me to get outside every...
Today’s article is going to be short, because I just want to challenge you. I want you to find a piece of paper, or poster board or even use a cool computer program. And here are some things I want you to do and/or think about. I want you to write down some goals, and/or make a vision board. Here are some things you can think about while writing your goals down or making your vision board. 1. Think about what makes you happy. Truly happy. 2. Think about different aspects of your life. Your mental well-being, your spiritual well-being, and your...
If you’ve been reading my articles for the last few weeks, you’ll know I’ve really been into learning more about nutrition in the previous few months. And I love learning, especially when it’s something I’m passionate about. My mom had asked me if I have ever read the Tom Brady book. I laughed, of course, cause I’m not a Patriots fan, and would never really think about reading anything he wrote. But when she briefly told me what it was, I thought I’d look into it. And then next thing you know she texted me and told me she bought it. I’ve been...
Let's talk about my mom for a minute, cause I'm super proud of her. But first, some backstory. I grew up with a very active dad. He was playing softball, always playing catch with us kids, and guarding me while I practiced basketball. My mom was never allowed to be in sports as a girl back in her day, so she would always tell me that she wasn't as active as she ever wanted to be. My mom loves to walk; she loves to spend time with God while she's walking. She loves to take pictures and truly...
Let’s talk about exercise and nutrition. I was always an athlete, so to me, the exercise was always there. But when it came to nutrition, I still lived a lifestyle of “as long as you burn more calories than you intake, you should be fine.” That lasted until I was 35. I packed on 30 pounds in three years. I was eating late at night, most nights, in bed while watching a movie. I was drinking high-calorie beer, as well as wine (which both were high in sugar). Bad nutritional habits and no exercise will definitely contribute to weight gain as I...
Hi everyone! For those that don't know me, my name is Serena Cator. I was raised here in Big Sandy, then moved away to attend college and then joined the Army. My husband and I moved back to raise our family. I've always been involved in sports and fitness. So, I was super excited when approached about doing a fitness article for the newspaper. This article will vary week to week, and I'm just so glad to be able to reach out to people during this time at home. There isn't one "right" way when...
The yearly tradition to support breast cancer awareness is Feb 1st at the basketball game in Big Sandy. The Pioneers will be playing Fort Benton that night. Everyone is encouraged to wear as much pink as you can to support breast cancer awareness. The Pioneers lost to the Longhorns in Fort Benton after some hard battles. Come on out and support two great causes, your Pioneers and Breast Cancer awareness. Do you know someone that had breast cancer? Or has breast cancer? There are so many stats you should know, the following below are just a few....
It was almost the end of my 12-hour shift when the call came in. As soon as you heard the voices on the radio, you knew something was different, and something was terribly wrong. I was the S2 (military intelligence) battle captain in our TOC (tactical operating center). I was in charge of all things that involved military intelligence for our current operations. So, the Battle Major hollered for me to send our UAV's (unmanned Ariel vehicles) to where our guys were being attacked. While this was...
The number one Jordan Mustangs came to town to face the number two Big Sandy Pioneers. The anticipation was building all week. You could see the look of determination on the faces of the Pioneers as they walked out with Pioneer flags, with the song Knock Out blaring on the brand-new speakers the Booster Club purchased. The speakers added to the enjoyment of the warm-up and the game since you could hear so much better. The Jordan Mustangs won the coin toss and deferred to the Pioneers who got...
“Wrestling is a mentally, strong sport, that taught all four of our boy’s self-discipline.” “It’s a sport that taught my kids how to win, and lose graciously”. These are two quotes from mothers that had their sons in wrestling from when they were in the Little Guy wrestling program all the way through till they graduated high school. In other words, wrestling is worth supporting. There is a high school wrestling mixer here in Big Sandy Thursday 24th at 5 p.m. The mixer will feature wrestlers from CJI, Chinook, Harlem, and Malta. Coach Tucke...
