  • Senior Center received a donation from Jefferson Inn and Lewis & Clark Caverns

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 26, 2022

Big Sandy Senior Center received a donation of $510 from Lewis and Clark Caverns and Jefferson Inn. They held a raffle and wanted to donate to a Senior Center that was doing a good job recovering from difficulties and was currently in compliance. The check was given to the center by Nichole Thennis, OAA Nutrition & Evidence-Based Program Manager, Montana Office On Aging. During public comment, Pat Matthews thanked the board for all their work to get the center up and running. She commented how...

  • Dave Christensen; Breeder of Corn

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 19, 2022

Navy Blue I was excited to go to Charlie Overbay's corn-husking party. I wanted to know how the corn faired with the drought and the grasshoppers. Charlie pointed out Dave Christensen from Big Timber, who was already husking corn. Dave is the corn breeder, something he has been working on for 50 years. Each year he hopes to make better corn. It has been a long time since I have talked to someone who was so passionate about his job. He absolutely believes it to be essential. The corn itself is...

Both will cost $12.00. Carla Courtnage is the new Big Sandy Senior Center Board of Directors member. She was appointed when Karen Baumann resigned. • From The Desk of the Mountaineer Editor

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 5, 2022

One request the public has made of the Mountaineer is to have more Ob-Ed articles, which means “opposition to the editorial” page, in other words, more political articles. Consider this your invitation. However, please keep the following in mind. I have the “Freedom of the press, the right to publish and disseminate information, thoughts, and opinions without restraint or censorship as guaranteed under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.” “First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohib...

Coach McKenney wrote, "We won an exciting 5-set match against North Star this week. Even though we played up and down throughout, I was happy to see us finish. We still have a lot of work to do, but I think we are on the right track. My goal for us is to continue being scrappy defensively while also improving our offensive game." • Pioneer Parent Organization Forms to Support teachers

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 21, 2022

The organizational meeting of the Pioneer Parent Organization met at the Big Sandy Library. The purpose is to find ways to support the teachers of Big Sandy. Both teachers and parents will belong to the organization so they can communicate needs and ideas. Every idea is doable. For example, suppose you want to offer to help do little things. In that case, you can make copies, laminate items, cut out items, hand out backpack buddies, help at the book fair, bake goodies for the teacher's lounge,...

  • Medical Center Board Still Looking for a Permanent CEO

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 21, 2022

Ron Wiens is still the acting CEO; however, the Medical Center is still looking for a permanent CEO. Anyone interested in the position should contact the Medical Center to require how to apply. I attended the monthly board meeting of the Board of Directors for BSMC. There were 29 people in attendance, all associated with the medical center except myself. I want to express that this will not be meeting minutes, primarily because by the time it gets to print, many agenda items will have changed. Sarah Schlepp reported that currently, the Medical...

  • Pioneer Volleyball splits the week

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 21, 2022

ven new volleyball enthusiasts can see a difference in the Pioneers. Michael Wright said, " The Pioneer's home game against the CJI was an exciting but tough match-up. Even though the Lady Pioneers lost all three sets, they kept the scores very close and played hard. What is very admirable is that the teammates on the Pioneers were always encouraging each other and cheered together every time they made a point. They proved that volleyball is a team effort and that they depend on each other to...

  • Disastrous Bear Paws Fire

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 14, 2022

It was a scorching day, over 100 degrees, with a strong wind of plus 20 miles an hour. Red flags warning were out when the fire alarm went off in Big Sandy. It was the kind of day that everyone needed to respond. The rumor was that it was arson because the fire was so sporadic. However, it was started by a contractor working on a cabin formerly owned by Keith Edwards and now owned by a relative. It was purely unintentional. He couldn't stop it and drove immediately to a place where there was...

  • Medical Guild Rummage Sale a Go!

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 14, 2022

It's great to have it back! Everyone has missed the Medical Guild rummage sale. Twenty-nine people came to the luncheon, and ten of those were new younger people. Lisa Sipler was extremely happy to see new younger people caring about the medical center. It is good when we get involved and give back to our community. These new volunteers have already started working! They also have a new vice president--Laci Labuda. And Michele Robertson volunteered to be responsible for the PR and...

  • Editorial

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 14, 2022

One of the most frustrating things I deal with at the Mountaineer is that we are only a weekly. The time frame of getting things in often feels late after the fact. Also, it creates issues for people who want their information in the paper but get it to me too late to make the deadline. The deadline is Friday by noon, except for those articles about weekend events. Why Friday? Because putting the paper together is like a six/eight-page jigsaw puzzle, which takes time. We send the paper out to the printers by 10:30 AM Monday so it can be...

  • Big Sandy Senior Center thriving in the first month

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 7, 2022

The Senior Center has been open for one month. By their own admission when it first opened, they needed to work on it to make it run smoother. They’ve done that now. There are many things that are making it work. The most amazing thing is the number of volunteers stepping up to make it successful. They have a new working set of bylaws. The financial review has been completed, and it has been used to make a budget they can work with. Between 37 and 50 meals are being served each day. I’ve eaten there, so I know it’s good. According to the contra...

  • The Catholic Church's annual Harvest Fest is scheduled for Saturday, September 17th

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 7, 2022

Committee members Jessica Ophus, Judy Yirsa, Sarah Sura, and Kathy Camp have taken an idea and made it, even after just one year, an event everyone looks forward to. My grandchildren spent the entire day there last year. Jessica said she got involved by accident. It was supposed to be a different Jessica, but they called her by accident. She's glad they did, because she believes we need to do more things to celebrate. The purpose of this article is to highlight the event, but more important, to...

  • Firemen's Concert was well attended, raising $24,000 for area Fire Departments

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 31, 2022

It was a very successful Fireman's Auction at Loma this last weekend. The auction, which goes into the general fund to help pay for the event, brought in over $10,000. Overall they raised over $24,000 for the various fire departments. Todd Witt said there were around 300 people this year, which is hard to determine because it is a bigger space. There was exceptional support from farmers and ranchers during the auction. Always amazing that during drought and challenging times, people come togethe...

  • Pioneer Volleyball off to a winning start

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 31, 2022

The Lady Pioneer Volleyball team won and won and won. Coach McKenney said, "What an incredible way to kick off our season! I am so proud of my girls. The defense on both sides of the court was so fun to watch. Chinook is a solid team, so that was a massive win for us." Big Sandy beat Chinook in three (25-23, 31-29, 25-23). The team stats totals: Digs: 76; Assists: 22; Kills: 32; Blocks: 2, and Aces: 8. Eva Yeadon had 20 digs, Jai Baumann had 20 assists, Angie Sant had 10 kills, Keira Galbavy...

  • Vandalism in two Counties

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

A weekly paper isn't the first place you read to get recent news. It was on Dustin Gasvoda's Facebook page first, and then KRTV covered the story, but it's too important for the community not to at least let everyone know what happened to them. There was further damage done to the Blaine County road equipment as well. I can not get information from the two counties' Sheriff's Departments either, as it is "still under investigation ."And that is all they will tell you, so the reports on Facebook...

  • Big Sandy's Farmer's Market and Vendors Fair

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

Paula Amsbaugh and Donita Darlington are co-sponsors of the newly formed Big Sandy Farmers Market and Vendors Fair. It runs every Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 till the end of September.Seeing both of them give the other credit for the event was interesting. So the picture is the only picture I have with both of them. I wanted to support the event and give credit where credit is due. They had an idea and didn't just sit around and talk about it over coffee. They did the work, and the market became a...

  • Big Sandy Baracuddas are trying a new fundraiser: Golf Scramble Beavercreek Golf Course

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

This September 3rd, a golf scramble at Beavercreek Golf Course in Havre will be a fun and new way for the Barracudas to raise funds for the team and support the new swimming pool fund. Registration opens at 7:30 am, with a Shotgun starting at 9:30 am. There are four people on a team with a team fee of $400. They can pay in advance or pay that morning. It covers everything: the green fees, lunch, and carts. I thought it sounded like fun. And I don’t even golf. I think it’s the word shotgun scramble. I’d form a team, but a new beginner slowing th...

  • Pioneer Football works towards State Title

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

Assistant Coach Tucker Taylor visited with me by phone. I asked so State Champions? Tucker Taylor said, "I think that is primarily the goal of the boys, the community, the coaches. Everybody, but ultimately we are going to have to practice and work hard. We are going to have to put some egos aside. Right now, we have all the talent in the world to go and win the state championship. As a coaching staff and the players, it's up to us to really buy into the team. It will be hard work and not make a...

  • Chouteau County Fireman's Concert, August 27th

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 17, 2022

Once again August 27th at Loma, there will be a fantastic event to celebrate who we are and support the volunteer fireman in the county. Last year this event raised just shy of $20,000 for all the county volunteer fire departments. They hope to continue this event this year and want it to get bigger and better. How can it not with music, great food, dancing, and the fun of outbidding your neighbor and, at the same time, helping our local fire department? The Stone family from Geraldine will...

  • Big Sandy Senior Center has three new board members

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 17, 2022

The Senior Center had a special meeting to elect new board members. Three new members were voted in by paper ballot. Four community members were willing to serve, with Sheila Duncan, Jim LaBuda, and Rhonda Works elected to the board. The other board members are Brenda Darlington, President, Wendy Kleinsasser, Terry Grant, and Karen Baumann. The board has been requested to get a better number of its members, and two months ago, the membership voted that anyone wanting to vote would be required...
