For four years, Cassie Bahnmiller has made a small nitch business by selling her Gourmet Krispies treats. She has so many customers that like to do pre-orders, so when she does make them, she always sells out. Cassie is famous around here for her Gourmet Krispies treats Reese's, Snickers, Oreo, S'mores, and Turtle. Turtles are my favorite. But Cassie's husband says she collects hobbies. She has started a new business or "hobby" by making home-made silk-screen shirts. Cassie does the screen...
City Wide Garage Sale The city-wide garage sale is a go! A few more hoops to jump through this year, but there are still 22 individual garage sale sites in the town this Saturday June 20. The sale starts at 8:00 in the morning and goes to 3:00 in the afternoon, if everything isn’t sold out by then. As in years past the Senior citizen center will be selling tacos in a bag as a fund raiser for the Big Sandy Barracuda’s swim team. A map is being printed but with last minute adds to the list it wasn’t available at the Mountaineer before print...
A number of gyms and businesses are reopening and there is a discussion on why the high school gym cannot be open to the public. The following is from a letter from The Chouteau County Environment Health Guidance letter for re-opening. All Phases: Employee Health-Health assessments should be conducted for all employees at beginning of each shift including keeping a log of temperature checks at the beginning of each shift of less than 100. Employees who have a fever, cough, or shortness of...
The Big Sandy City Council met and used the majority of its time to discuss the town's pool opening information. As well, the Big Sandy Barracuda's swim team presented to the city council a plan to hold a local swim meet. It was discussed and approved that the swim team could hold a swim meet. There was a plan, submitted to the Chouteau County Health nurse, which met the needs of Phase 2, and the city council also approved it. (On a side note, the Big Sandy City Council has approved plans to re-...
After researching Father's Day, I discovered it isn't celebrated the same way, or for that matter, it isn't even celebrated on the same day around the world. In the United States, it is always the third Sunday in June. In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, "tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother's Day for male parents." She went around to local businesses to gather support for her idea, and on June 19, 1910, the state of Washington celebrated the first-ever Father's Day. In...
I was sitting outside the Mountaineer on the new bench, working on writing on what it means to be from a rural community. I smile because it means something precious. Three senior citizens were putting away this year's Rotary prizes because they couldn't hold the Rotary Banquet this year because of COVID-19. Sponsors were supportive, however, and told them to keep what they had donated till next year. They see me halfway down the block and yelled, "there is no story here!" I walked to them and l...
Nathan Keane usually gets up, lets the dog out, and then makes coffee for himself. For some reason, on Wednesday, June 3rd, he went directly to the kitchen to make himself some coffee. Nathan looked outside his kitchen window to see 30 feet from the house and in the chicken coop a grizzly bear. He had to do a double-take. "I couldn't believe it. I would have never dreamed there would be a grizzle bear in my front yard." The grizzly was inside the chicken pen. They couldn't see what he was...
Lift was required to close its doors on March 19th by the state of Montana because of COVID-19. Their doors were closed for 74 days and just opened this June 1st again. Lift is a CrossFit organization. The owner, Julie Myers, is happy. She said, "I'm very glad to be back open!" They do have to take precautions. "Everybody is supposed to wipe down every piece of equipment that they use." Clients are asked not to come if they have any of the symptoms of COVID-19. If you are sick, stay home....
It was fun to discover Mother Goose walking the streets of Big Sandy. Even more fun to see that she had ways to encourage the kids to read. According to Mother Goose, "This year's Summer Reading theme is Imagine Your Story, and challenge you to use your imagination. You can go on adventures with Jack and the Beanstalk or ride a wild unicorn. The adventure is yours to have." "Although this year's Summer Reading Program will look different than usual we have used our imaginations to come up with w...
The Booster Club met for the first time in four months. The essential discussion was probably the call to parents who care about their children's activities to get involved in supporting those activities. This Booster Club is like no other Booster Club. Usually, Booster Clubs are included only in high school sports activities. The Big Sandy Booster Club supports both grade school and high school activities, including all extracurricular activities, not just sports. An interesting fact is that...
Summer 2020 Challenge One of my favorite songs, because my mom and brother, both gone now because of cancer, loved it: Summertime, an' the livin' is easy.Fish are jumpin' an' the cotton is high. Oh, yo' daddy's rich and yo' ma is good-lookin'.So hush, little baby, don' you cry. One of these mornin's you goin' to rise up singin' Then you'll spread yo' wings an' you'll take the sky. But till that mornin', there's a nothin' can harm you With Daddy an' Mammy standin' by. But summer is also a busy...
Once again Keely Bahmiller heading up the effort for the 3rd Annual Big Sandy Community Yard Sale June 20th between 8-3:00. She is still trying to get more people to commit to have a sale. COVID-19 rules are required, but she has gotten permission from the County Health Nurse and the City council to once again organize a community Yard sale. In years past, the Community Yard Sale has had between 25-30 different Yard Sales. This year so far only 12 individuals have committed. People have travelled as far as Billings to attend and we need more...
Editor's note: During the Summer months of 2020, the Mountaineer will support the businesses that support the paper by writing a weekly Business Profile. We acknowledge the interdependence we have with small businesses. During COVID-19, it has become obvious how important our communities are, and with that, make this effort to support each other. Chris Halko is the owner and pharmacist of both Fort Benton and Big Sandy Pharmacy, and he wanted to make sure that I emphasized the employees of the...
The Big Sandy Barracuda's swim practice is started June 2, according to Travis Baumann head coach with a 5:45 AM older/Advance Swimmers starting time. Connie Reichelt will be working again this year with the younger kids between 8:00-9:00 each morning, and between 4:15-4:45 will be the intermediate swimmers. Travis said, "I can't thank Connie enough. "She does an amazing job with the little kids." Currently, there is between 36-38 kids wanting to be on the swim team, with the possibility of...
Ryan and I exchanged E-Mails to visit about his chance to play college basketball. Mountaineer: You were first going to go to Butte, correct? Why did you decide to go to Rocky? Ryan Roth: "Yes, I had made plans to attend Montana Tech and major in geological engineering, but one day while working, the head coach from Rocky called me. Thankfully, I had the service to return his call because he told me that the program was interested in picking me up. I decided to go to Rocky because it was the...
Although the importance of Memorial Day should be honored and remembered, Lindsay Boyce wrote to me, saying, “We would like to notify people that the whole parade and program at the high school are canceled. The American Legion Post will still be doing a 21-gun salute and playing taps at the cemetery to honor those who have passed. However, due to phase 1 still being in affect, we can’t have an audience and therefore, will not be reading the names.” The American Legion Auxiliary will not be distributing the poppies either this year. The event...
I interviewed Brooke Schwenke on the internet, and she wrote her answers to my questions. I asked her about her drawing that she had received an award for. Brooke wrote, "I entered the American Auxiliary Poppy Poster contest my junior year, because my art teacher, Ms. Jaramillo, presented us with the amazing opportunity to get our work into the contest. She always offered us the best ways to get our artwork out there and was 100% supportive through it all and always making sure we didn't have...
Not your traditional graduation, but it made me cry just the same. It was a beautiful hot day, the weather held, and the sun shined right into parents’ faces. It started with the graduates walking from downtown to the football field. The streets were lined with residence cheering and throwing confetti. Girls on one side and boys on the other side as they walked, not in a single line but almost. Like they were tackling their future together. The names of each senior were read along with s...
I had to go. I knew it would be heart-warming to watch a parade that was formed just so people at the nursing home could get outside. It was a beautiful day; the sun was shining, and there wasn't any wind. They waited till the Sheriff's car came around the corner, followed by several people driving their cars by so they could wave and tell them hello! A motorcycle went by, an old blue pickup, a red corvette with my grandchildren in it, an old built car, I didn't know what make it was, there...
Angel Johnson, PHN, Chouteau County Public Health wrote the following letter: “To all Big Sandy Senior Parents--Currently, we do not have an answer as to when the Governor will move the community into Phase II of the re-opening plan. Unfortunately, this makes scheduling events to celebrate your student’s graduation tenuous at best.” “In phase 1 of the Governor’s plan, places of assembly are to remain closed. This would include the Senior Center, Church halls, community halls, and any other gathering place. We received clarification on 5’7’20...
The Big Sandy Barracudas are planning on a swim season. They are hopeful the Governor will move us into Phase II of reopening Montana before June 1st. They are holding swim registration on May 21st at 5:00 pm at the football field concession area. This will allow for the correct social distancing and still be able to have everyone attend to obtain the information they will need for the swim season. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Heather Pleninger or Diana Labuda....
Last Thursday at the Big Sandy City Council meeting, they learned Big Sandy had won the Montana State Park and Recreation grant for a Walking Trail (sidewalk). The Walking Trail would start at the F.E. Miley and connect the school with the sidewalks already along Johanson street, the main street downtown. It was funded at $50,500, which was $10,000 short of the requested amount. However, Rotary has already met and is willing to pay for the rest of the money. The total project was bid at...
The Big Sandy Food Bank staff and food bank recipients have expressed great gratitude for the support of the local community that has given dollars to help provide food to those in our community. There has been some increase in need. Terry Grant said, "There have always been those that have anonymously contributed to the Food Bank account at The Grocery Store. This acknowledgment includes all the time Deb puts in receiving and keeping track of the donated funds so that we can keep the shelves st...
The school board voted to keep the school closed and continue online learning for the rest of the school year. In the interest of transparency, I will be quoting from the Big Sandy School district COVID-19 Emergency Policies as voted on. Please note these are not minutes just a quick update of the decisions of the Board concerning further education and educational activities at the Big Sandy School.” “The Board of trustees and its staff are operating under unusual, even unprecedented circumstances by virtue of the declaration of a sta...
To open the local restaurants, there are several rules they must follow. The Mint will be opening while following these guidelines as well as Ma's in Loma. Peps will not be opening and will continue to serve the community as they have over the last month. Ma's will also be open only by reservation if you want to sit inside, as Greg Bouchard reported he is removing six tables and will not be able to allow anyone in once the tables are full. Please call ahead for reservations at 406-739-4400 or...
