A Feral swine fact sheet is available at the Chouteau County Extension office or online at: https://www.animalrangeextension.montana.edu/wildlife/documents/Squeal%20on%20Pigs%20Fact%20Sheet19.pdf. Below are a few highlights from the fact sheet. Feral swine have not been documented in the state of Montana. Montana citizens need to understand how important it is to keep this pest out of our state. Feral swine are aggressive animals that can be extremely destructive to fields, fences, and facilities. Their wallows can affect ponds and wetlands, mu...

  • A year in Pictures 2020

    Jan 6, 2021

Editor's Note Usually, on the first week of the new year, the Big Sandy Mountaineer covers a brief review of the following year's news. Since I have been involved with the paper for the last two years, we went back and covered all the events the Mountaineer wrote articles over the year. I have decided not to repeat that pattern, as so many of the regular yearly events have been canceled; Schools went to remote learning, and all sports were canceled, Senior trip canceled, and graduation outside....

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jan 6, 2021

Greeting and here’s to a healthier new year. Masks, who likes them? No One! But here’s the thing, businesses are required to have signs on their doors asking people to wear their mask. I agree the signs should not say “It’s the Law” I think a better word should say “Out of Respect.” Respect not only for the businesses and their workers, but for your friends, family and community. Sean Janssen|Jan 6, 2021

In a sense, Big Sandy boys' basketball is picking up just where it left off. The Pioneers faced Fort Benton with a divisional title and state playoff berth on the line in their penultimate game of 2020, so why not start off with the Longhorns to tip off 2021? Unfortunately, the season opener Saturday in the Pioneers' home gym ended with Big Sandy on the wrong end of the final score again. The Longhorns were the only District 9C foe the Pioneers never solved last season and they found them just...

  • Pioneer girls' hoop go to school of hard knocks

    Sean Janssen|Jan 6, 2021

There are no easy games in the District 9C, as the Big Sandy girls have found out again and again on the hardwood in recent years. Though there are somewhat less challenging games than those against the Fort Benton Longhorns, who came up north and began their redemption tour Saturday. The lone blemish in a 24-1 season in 2020 left them out of the state playoffs and Fort Benton is determined not to be denied this time. The Longhorns, led by MSU-Billings commit Aspen Giese, a senior, made quick...
