Big Sandy Medical Center held it's 60th Annual Meeting on December 19, 2024. A delicious chilli and soup supper was served in the newly remodelled dining room area of the facility. With about 20 people in attendance, there was ample space to eat and hear the happenings of the last year. Line items on the agenda for the meeting included a review of the by-laws, the medical guild report, elections of the new board members, the CEO report, and a Year in Review presentation. Over the last two...
On January 1, Chouteau County got a new sheriff, and Sheriff Vernon Burdick retired. Justin Smith started as the new Sheriff on the same day. He worked in construction in Ohio and began working with a deputy sheriff. "He told me about the job, and I was really interested. I was still in high school at the time. You can't be a police officer there unless you're 21 years old, so I joined the Air Force. And kind of the rest is history. I ended up in Great Falls and stationed at Malmstrom, and once...
It is the first full week of 2025. Many of us are setting goals and resolutions for the coming year, in hope of making positive changes to our lives in the coming months. I have written more than a few columns on how to make resolutions and goals that stick and a couple on new year’s observances in Big Sandy history. However, until this week I never asked where the practice came from in the first place. It has always seemed like something we just do because it’s what everyone has always done. Where did the modern practice come from? The mod...

This is a correction to the Letter to the Editor. Well, the talking heads on MSNBC and FOX have given me a few chuckles. The former says the Democrats have a mandate to change because they didn’t win the popular vote and the latter says the Republicans have an overwhelming mandate to-do whatever they want. The numbers don’t support either claim. The 2024 elections had almost 245 million eligible voters. Of these Harris got 30.46 %, Trump got 31.47%. There were nearly 4 million voters that didn’t vote for either of these candidates. Natio...
Over the weekend, I was talking with a friend of mine who has an upper management job in a large international organization. He was telling me about a documentary he watched on happiness that featured the story of a Vietnamese rickshaw cab operator. In the interviews, the man talked about his life and was surprisingly positive given the level of poverty he experienced. He spoke of how much he enjoyed his job because he got to work outside and be active. At the end of the day, he had enough money to eat a good meal with his son, who he was...
A new congress assembled today (Jan 3, 2024) and it’s the first time since 2007 my schoolmate of yesteryear and dear friend of today won’t be there. It’s a new era. I’m referring, of course, to Big Sandy’s own Jon Tester, former teacher and school board member, former President of the Montana Senate, former senior US Montana Senator , and current farmer and neighbor to Big Sandy residents. He’s gone from Congress, and Montana lost a powerful ally and advocate; it’s the nature of our political system. Tenure brings with it more influence--po...
The Lady Pioneer basketball team was back in action this past weekend at home against CJI. This Lady Pioneer team is scrappy! They are all over the floor, and their on-ball defense is very intense. It’s fun to watch them hustle after every ball. The first team they played was CJI, and they beat them by 13 points with a score of 51-38. CJI started the game with a nice take to the basket. Jenny Sant got a nice steal and baseline jumper to tie the game at 2. Both teams had a slow start to the game, but it was still action-packed, with Jai B...
The Pioneer boys’ basketball team was also back in action this past weekend against CJI. The boys struggled a bit from the start, with CJI having 7 turnovers in the first quarter, but their effort and hustle are fun to watch as they do their best to battle back. CJI stepped out on top with some big shots at the beginning of the game. The Pioneers did start the game with a great board from Eyon Sherburn and a 3-pointer from Aidan Morsette. Karter Jurenka also had a nice take for an AND1, and Ryder Galbavy had a nice post move for 2 points. J...

Former Big Sandy 2001 State wrestling champion and now Alaskan Ironworker, Lance Nelson, left, with former Northern Montana State University wrestling coach David Ray were part of the N-MSU Northern Hall of Fame inductees for 2024. The Lights wrestling team won the NAIA national championship 20 years ago. Eight of the Lights earned All-American honors, and five won national titles. This feat has been done only 3 times in college history....
