  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 15, 2020

Over the last few weeks, I have been reading about New Year’s Resolutions. One of the most common suggestions for folks to apply in order to succeed in their life changes is that you find a group of people to associate with that are doing the same thing. This is a powerful idea because it is well supported by human behavior studies. We are influenced by our environment and peer group. For example, children are more likely to read regularly if they are raised in a household with parents who read. Kids raised in a household with parents who d...

  • River Ramblings South

    Gay Pearson|Jan 15, 2020

We had friends from Pennsylvania visiting as we were making plans and preparing to market our 2019 calves at auction. They are also farmers and ranchers; they had brought their local Lancaster Farming paper with them to show us their markets and sales. What a difference from our auction yards in Montana where mostly cattle are sold, sometimes a horse, pigs, sheep, or goats. At their auctions, they sell the usual livestock; then, they sell alpacas, yaks, chickens, rabbits, parakeets, guineas,...

  • Pioneers snap skid on strength of Strutz's 12-11-10

    Sean Janssen|Jan 15, 2020

For one half of basketball, the Big Sandy Pioneers exorcised their frustrations Saturday on an overwhelmed opponent. Having dropped their last three games - two of which were by a combined eight points - the boys in purple and gold looked determined to blow the doors off North Star. Jumping out to a 22-5 advantage, suffocating Big Sandy defense prevented the Knights from scoring until 3 minutes, 44 seconds had elapsed. Pioneer senior Ryan Roth had already scored in double digits by the time the...

  • Lady Pioneers show flashes in North Star loss

    Sean Janssen|Jan 15, 2020

With a 7-2 run to open the contest, the Big Sandy girls basketball team looked ready to bounce back Saturday against North Star. The Lady Pioneers were coming off a 58-26 defeat at two-time defending state champion Box Elder a night earlier. In the opening minutes, they looked read to pick on someone their own size. Senior Seanna Demontiney made a pass that set up classmate Lainey Gregory beautifully for a lay-in to make it 2-2. Fellow senior Amanda Cline snagged a steal and Gregory put the...

  • Cheap Flights; Excellent Sights

    Judy Yirsa|Jan 15, 2020

Last week I wrote about Vanessa and Liana Janssen's recent visit to Japan. In actuality, the Janssen family consists of three children in total. It simply was not feasible for the entire family to make the trip east, as airfare to Japan was quite costly. So the head of the family and Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Sean Janssen, researched alternate destinations with cheap flights for a trip with his two young sons, Cameron, age six, and Holden, age 4. He found a terrific deal from Seattle to...

  • TALES OF OLD BIG SANDY: Ament's Barber Shop - The Disneyland of Big Sandy

    Steve Sibra|Jan 15, 2020

I was born in 1956, so somebody cut my hair before George Ament and his wife Penny moved to town and took over the barbershop. Somebody cut it, but I don't remember who it was. My first memory of a haircut is my first memory of George. For me, he was the Big Sandy barber. I could look it up somewhere, but since I am more about anecdotes than accuracy, I am not going to bother: I think George came to Big Sandy in about 1962. I believe he came from Minnesota. He probably thought he was going to...
