  • CHS to Close Big Sandy Elevator May 1

    Zoe Merrill|Feb 5, 2020

The Mountaineer usually finds out about local news from a resident. In this case, I was eating lunch at Pep's and heard they were going to close the elevator. I went over to CHS and asked. Shane Cline told me on Tuesday, to contact Keith Schumacher the general manager for any furhter information on the closing of the Big Sandy Elevator. CHS has three full-time employees, Sue Knight, who has worked at the elevator for 27 years. Shane Cline who has worked there 14 years, and Chris Dixon who has...

    Zoe Merrill|Feb 5, 2020

Steve Gannon is originally from the south of Sun River. He moved to Big Sandy and worked with Tom Sheehy on defense work. While he was in Big Sandy, he lived in the country south of Sibra's. Steve grew up in the country and loves country living. "I miss Big Sandy, but Fort Benton is a great town. He was elected to Chouteau County Attorney in 2003, which means he has served for 17 years. Each time Steve is elected, it is for four years. He is currently in this period for two years. Steve was...

  • Car theft in Big Sandy

    Zoe Merrill|Feb 5, 2020

On Saturday, January 25th, a diesel pickup was outside The Grocery Store. The owner left it running while he ran in. It was right outside the front door. He was inside the store for less than five minutes and when he went out his pickup was gone. It was kind of a luck of the draw, because there were three cars parked outside The Grocery Store. The Grocery Store has camera’s so when they watched the camera’s footage they saw a pickup was driving down the street, stopped briefly, let a guy out, he walked over to the pickup, and drove it awa...

  • Beirwagen's talk; Commitment, love, and patience and 66 years of marriage

    Zoe Merrill|Feb 5, 2020

It was a beautiful day in the '50s, and I noticed Louis and June Beirwagen were eating lunch at the Bear Paw Coffee Shop & Deli, their daughters Cherie's deli. I had always wanted to interview them, and I immediately thought, "It's Valentine's Day month." Now it would be a good time. I started with a quick question for Louis. "When, were you married? He laughed and said, "Dec 27, 1953. Two days after Christmas." June immediately replied, "I don't recommend that. Too cold, too hard on everybody...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Feb 5, 2020

Winter desiccation can be very hard on evergreen trees. Dry soil in winter often cannot replace the moisture trees lose to the cold dry winter air. The symptoms of winter damage and die back may not become visible until spring or summer growth begins. Winter damaged trees may only show a few dead branches or twigs. In most severe cases, the entire tree may die. Evergreen trees are more susceptible to winter desiccation than deciduous trees as the evergreens retain their needles and provide more area for moisture loss. Young evergreens are most...

  • New at The Mountaineer

    Jeremiah Genereux|Feb 5, 2020

Hello readers of the Mountaineer, I am the new kid on the block. Many of you might recognize and know me, but just for good measure my name is Jeremiah Genereux. I will be writing for this newspaper for the last few months of my high school career, as it is where I am co-opping. I am not just here for the fun of it, even though I have really enjoyed my time here so far. The reason I am here is to get some positive experience in the newspaper business before I officially start my writing journey...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Feb 5, 2020

A while back, I read a book on an army Colonel who took over a demoralized company during the Vietnam War. One of the first things he did as commander was to rename his company “Hardcore” and require the soldier to repeat the name constantly. The idea was that the troops assumed they were screw-ups. They didn’t see themselves as tough soldiers. He changed their identities while changing their habits and disciplines. The impact of changing how the troops saw themselves was enormous. They approached excellence with zeal because they were the ...

  • Positive Pioneer Praises

    Heather Wolery|Feb 5, 2020

It’s been awhile since I’ve sent out my positive praises but I’m back with a long overdue one this week. I would like to send out praises to all of our bus drivers. We have one route for school that Trent Cline or Charlie Sipler drives and two contracted routes through Matthews Transportation that Pat and Dan Matthews and Clara Allderdice drive. So far they have made 168 trips on their routes which totals 61,992 miles! These same bus drivers, including Layne Taylor, Shaud Schwarzbach and Kelly Haaland have also driven over 6000 miles takin...

  • What's Happening at BSMC?

    Feb 5, 2020

The holidays are over and we're finally getting back into our "normal" routines around here. Boy, did we celebrate in style though! The halls were decked and each room had a special touch. We want to offer a thank you to Amy Terry and her sons, Hunter and Wylee, for stopping in to decorate some of the residents' rooms. It is so heartwarming to see our community come together to support our residents. On December 13, the kiddos from the Catholic Church performed their Christmas Concert and...

  • Second-half slide sinks Pioneers

    Sean Janssen|Feb 5, 2020

The rematch of a game that went down to the wire for the Big Sandy boys' basketballers again provided plenty of excitement late. Unfortunately, a Pioneer team that shot out to a 31-16 lead at halftime had no interest in such second-half heroics and fell again to nonleague foe Denton-Geyser-Stanford in frustrating fashion. DGS previously defeated the Pioneers 64-61 on Jan. 3 in Big Sandy. Defensively, Big Sandy felt the business end of a pointed comeback effort as the host Bearcats roared back...

  • Lady Pioneers' shooting goes cold at DGS

    Sean Janssen|Feb 5, 2020

Stepping back out of league play for a night, the Big Sandy girls hoop squad could not even the season series Friday with Denton-Geyser-Stanford. Facing a foe who came north earlier this season and spoiled the Lady Pioneers' night, the Big Sandy offense simply could not get enough buckets to fall in a 52-12 romp for the Bearcats in Denton. "We put up shots," Big Sandy coach Pete Jerrel said. "Just could not get many to fall." While DGS sank seven three-pointers on the night, the Pioneers were...

  • Wrestlers grapple with each other, flu in Big Sandy

    Sean Janssen|Feb 5, 2020

The lone home wrestling meet on the calendar for Big Sandy came and went in a flash. Class C wrestling programs on and near the Hi-Line are depleted right now and it showed Thursday evening. “With the sicknesses and injuries, (visitors) brought about half of their kids,” Pioneers coach Tucker Taylor said. Though it required some of the boys on the Fort Benton-Big Sandy coop team, Harlem and Chinook to step up a weight class or two, each grappler present got to wrestle at least two, and in some cases, three matches. Freshman Tannin Baumann wen...
