    Zoe Merrill|Feb 10, 2021

The Town of Big Sandy has joined with Big Sandy School District to create an interlocal agreement to support the location. Currently, the fundraising community has raised over $70k of the estimated $1.7 million needed. They recognize it’s only a start. However, they are excited that the Big Sandy Rotary committed $30,000 and Big Sandy School Educational Foundation for another $30,000. The Lippard-Clawiter Foundation gave a generous donation of $7,500. Brad Moore, Chairman of the Big Sandy Education Foundation Board of Directors, said, “we are p...

Fans attending the Big Sandy-Chinook basketball game 2 weeks ago were treated to a heart warming display of sportsmanship, courtesy of the Chinook Sugar Beeters and the Big Sandy Pioneers. In the closing minutes of the game, 8th grader Sonny Phillips scored his first basket as a varsity player. After a missed 3 point attempt was rebounded by a Sugar Beeter, the opposing player passed the ball back to Sunny who made a second attempt at the 3 point shot, and again missing. The missed shot was...

Topping is the drastic removal or cutting back of large branches in mature trees. The tree is sheared like a hedge and the main branches are cut to stubs. Many homeowners top trees when they reach heights considered unsafe fearing a strong wind might blow large trees over. However, the extensive root system of a healthy tree provides adequate support for the tree. Below are a number of reasons why deciduous trees should not be topped. Starvation: Trees need leaves to manufacture starches during photosynthesis. A tree’s transport system moves s...

Check "season series sweep" off the to-do list for the Big Sandy boys after a 68-55 win Saturday against North Star in varsity basketball. The Pioneers moved to 4-7 with their first home-and-away sweep of a District 9C foe. The opportunity remains open to do the same against Turner in Friday's rematch on the road. On "Parents' Night," when graduating seniors in particular were honored, Kade Strutz fittingly led Big Sandy with 22 points. The year-end celebration bumped up as Saturday's home final...

    Sean Janssen|Feb 10, 2021

Better foes outmatched the Big Sandy girls on the basketball court on Friday and Saturday as the difficult 2021 season winds down. The Pioneers fell 79-24 on Friday at Box Elder and 65-8 to North Star on Saturday at home. The visit to the Bears represented one of the better offensive outputs this season for Big Sandy. "We came out a little scared," Pioneers coach Pete Jerrel said, as the Pioneer girls struggled against the Bears' 2-2-1 full-court press and superior height. "After we settled...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Feb 10, 2021

I woke up at 2:30 this morning. After tossing and turning for 30 minutes, I finally gave up on trying to get back to sleep and got up. I’ve got to admit that I wasn’t all that happy about getting up many hours before the alarm. After finally giving up on getting back to sleep, I got out of bed, started the coffee maker, and settled in for a long morning. I started the morning reading a novel, followed by studying for the morning sermon, cleaning the kitchen, changing bed sheets, and a few other chores. The quiet house and extra time gave me...

My Mimi was my dad’s mom. She was a feisty 5’1” woman who could fix a car, run a store, patch a tire, and bake the best Buttermilk Pie, Carrot Cake & Texas Sheet Cake you’ve ever tasted. And those were just her hobbies. She loved the Lord, and wasn’t afraid to share Him with you. Recently, with everything that’s been going on, I’ve been thinking about something she used to say to me, “Don’t be ugly.” Since many of you aren’t familiar with Texas-speak, this meant “don’t be hateful.” I’ve noticed that many of us are being hateful to each other. I...
