CHS Big Sky met with the local patrons on Friday, February 21, at the Big Sandy City Hall. Howard Hammond, a board member and a former Big Sandy resident started the meeting with a statement. He has spent two weeks educating himself further, reviewing, and visiting with CHS personal. He wasn't necessarily proud of how we were informed, but he was comfortable with the accuracy of the financials being presented that morning. In his opinion, CHS has one of the best audit processes, and we can...
During the discussion Kelly Haaland reported on the on-going maintance of the FE Miley flooring in the lunchroom, multi-purpose area. They would like to get that flooring done right after school is over so it can be ready to use it for homecoming. The cost is $26,000, which included removing asbestos flooring and the cost of disposing of the asbestos. The board approved the new flooring. There was a second maintenance project discussed, which would take the elementary stage out, and create a storage room for the cost of $6,000. This project...
On February 16th, the annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner was held at the Montana Agriculture Center in Fort Benton. The event began at 12:30 in the afternoon, and almost every Republican candidate was there. This year they served appetizers at a buffet table instead of the usual dinner. Many people came and enjoyed the speeches, along with getting to know our Republican candidates. The State Representative and the State Senator opened with short but well-thought-out speeches. Afterward, the first of...
Believe it or not, the gardening season will be upon us before we know it. Below are a few gardening facts to help you prepare for the upcoming season. • Soil tests should be taken in the garden every three years. • The best time to collect a soil sample is in the spring after soil thaw. • Fall soil sampling is not recommended because Nitrogen in the soil is depleted during the fall and winter seasons. • Do not work soil when it is wet. If the soil sticks to the shovel, wait a few more days. • The number one thing that kills our plants is...

It has already been a muddy Spring, which is unusual, with it still being February. For us, the moisture is a blessing as it is for most farmers and ranchers, but it can also be a curse when trying to haul hay or feed livestock on our county and ranch roads. Vehicles and tires are soon mud encrusted with our usual gumbo, and deep potholes take a toll, as well as the strain of getting through the mud where there is very little gravel. When we have appointments or meetings, we feed extra so we can spend a few days at our place near Big Sandy,...
HAVRE - For the first time in seven years, Big Sandy is sending a boys basketball team to the Northern C divisional tournament at Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls. To give some perspective, that is more than half a lifetime ago for the youngest members of the team. Pioneers head coach Thomas Dilworth had seen a Big Sandy program fallen on hard times from afar while assisting with the Fort Benton program. "Watching Ryan Roth starting as an eighth grader, I saw this fearless kid who was about...
HAVRE - Two teams with championship pedigrees escorted the Big Sandy girls out of the 9C district basketball tournament. Fort Benton successfully defended its district championship, opening with a 61-9 Thursday rout of the Lady Pioneers. Senior Amanda Cline chipped in 5 of those Big Sandy points and added a team-high 6 rebounds. Freshmen Mia Dilworth and Kylee Sternberg each added a bucket. Three Longhorns finished in double figures: McKenzie Clark (13), Aspen Giese (12) and McKenna Hanford...
Influenza seems to be at its best this last couple of weeks, which means many of us are feeling at our worst. Influenza A and B have both been prevalent in our community for several weeks now, but we have seen a steep increase recently. Reportedly about 1/3 of the students in the grade school were out sick last week and those numbers are expected to linger. Influenza A and/or B is commonly referred to as “the flu.” It is important to note that influenza is not a typical “stomach bug” and is usually not associated with nausea, vomiting or diarrh...
The opening chapter of the Gospel of Mark tells the story of Jesus’ ministry work in the city of Capernaum on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. These events are taking place very early in Jesus’ ministry, and he is just beginning to draw a large following. The chapter includes accounts of Jesus teaching to masses, casting out demons, and healing sick folks. Jesus ministers to the crowds all day and late into the night. When he goes to Peter’s home to rest for the night, people follow him. He continues until well after sundown. The next morni...
