  • Ash Wednesday today

    Robert Lucke|Mar 1, 2017

Today is Ash Wednesday. It is a time when an old, old church tradition takes place in many churches around the world. In our church, Van Orsdel Methodist, in Havre, we save our palm leaves from Palm Sunday, burn them and the ashes of those palm leaves are applied to the foreheads of people participating in Ash Wednesday services in the form of a cross. That signals that Lent has begun and will continue until Easter Sunday which, this year is April 16. Traditionally in many families, Lent is a time to sacrifice like giving up drinking or...

  • John Fray painted "Glacier for the Ages"

    Robert Lucke|Mar 1, 2017

John Fery painted many huge oil paintings for the Great Northern Railroad. His paintings are dramatic, exciting and in many cases breath taking. They are also very large! From 1910 until 1913 Fery was on the payroll of the railroad and was expected to paint a number of paintings each year. Many of Fery's paintings can be seen in Glacier Park Lodge, Many Glacier Lodge and Lake McDonald Lodge. The painting featured here is similar to one that hangs on one side of the huge inglenook fireplace at La...

  • Mayor Stiles shares his thoughts on Presidents Day

    Robert Lucke|Mar 1, 2017

“The Mountaineer” asked Mayor Stiles to write something about President’s Day for our President’s Day issue of the paper. Mayor Stiles wrote a great piece of history and hope that, unfortunately, got lost in cyber space for a week. Finally we retrieved it and it was too good not to include in the newspaper, even though it was not the President’s Day issue. So, here it is. Thank you Mr. Mayor. You do credit to us all. Presidents day By Stephen Stiles President’s Day which is still called “Washington’s Birthday by the federal government was...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert C. Lucke|Mar 1, 2017

My sister called me one night and said she was in the middle of making some chicken and dumplings. I reminded her that our dad used to make chicken and dumplings out at Clear Creek several times a season and feed it to anyone coming along to his fishing camp. His chicken and dumplings were very good. The dumplings can be made from Bisquick for a very easy application or use the simple recipe included here but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. To make the chicken stew you will need 3 pounds of bone in chicken parts. Thighs work well. 8 cups of c...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Mar 1, 2017

Q: My wife gets after me because of my bad language, and I admit I probably swear more than I should, but what difference does it make? No one thinks much about it anymore, as far as I can tell. A: Sadly our society has changed in the last 50 years or so; it seems like it’s almost impossible to read a popular book or watch a program on television today without encountering vulgar or profane language. What difference does your speech make as far as you and your wife are concerned? First, it obviously makes a difference to your wife, and if f...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 1, 2017

A pastor friend of mine often tells a story about a man and a woman approaching a building at the same time. When the man notices the woman, he rushes ahead to open the door and hold it for the woman, who was a stranger to him. As she entered the building, she stopped turned to him and said: “Are you holding this door for me because I am a woman?” He responded: “No. I am holding it because I am a gentleman.” Almost every instance I heard this story told by my friend was in the context of working together at a home for kids with emotion...
