The Big Sandy Senior Center Board seriously considering closing the Big Sandy Senior Center. They are currently in the process of visiting with local and state authorities about options. However, the future is challenging. Big Sandy Senior Center has been struggling for years to be financially viable. The Big Sandy Senior Center had its first organizational meeting on May 14, 1974 and was established in 1976 with annual revenue of $121,758. It had six employees. The first time I wrote about the...
In October, Brad Moore of Big Sandy was chosen as Montana's Superintendent of the Year but just recently traveled to Nashville to receive his reward. Brad represented Montana at the National Conference on Education in Nashville, Tennessee. He wasn't chosen as the AASA National Superintendent, but what an honor it was walking across the stage to hearing his name read as Montana's Superintendent of the Year. Brad has been a superintendent here in Big Sandy, where his wife, Sheri, works as a third-...

Question and Answers on Grasshopper Management in Cropland 1. Why should I be concerned about grasshoppers in 2022? Drought conditions in 2021 and an open fall promoted a high egg lay which will result in large hatches this spring. If a drought continues in Chouteau County, populations will continue to increase. Grasshoppers are a boom and bust species and thrive with arid conditions. 2. Will a wet spring break the cycle? The answer is yes. Prime conditions for decreasing populations begin with warm, early springs followed by a hot period follo...
Last week, I spent some time reading the earliest issue of the Mountaineer that is included in the online database of newspapers. I recounted a few of the articles for context on just how old the paper was before diving into the front page editorials opining on the future of the town. One of the articles I touched on was about the Heiberg family arriving in Big Sandy from Grand Island, Nebraska to homestead west of town. Friday evening, I got a call from Jay Warrall. He spotted the Heiberg name...
Sometimes getting away from home gives you new insight. On my recent trip to Oklahoma, I discovered I couldn't buy an airplane ticket unless I promised to wear a mask the whole time. I was reminded of that fact listening to a video repeatedly while waiting for the plane about the law of wearing a mask while on the plane. When I got on the plane, I was reminded again. So those who create a scene aboard a plane about not wearing a mask planned on making the scene. While on the plane, I had great...

Valentine’s Day is over for another year. For that day, it seems as if everyone is madly in love, with partners, children, and even pets! Special meals are prepared, cards given and received, and candy abounds. How wonderful to love and be loved is undoubtedly the theme of the day. Lord Alfred Tennyson was the person who originally wrote, " Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved." I have always questioned that sentiment. We all know those people who love meagerly, shallowly, and mildly. There will never be any extreme highs...
The Pioneers' first contest in the tournament was against the 8C champion, the Roy-Winfred Outlaws; it was an early morning game, something the Pioneers are not familiar with this season. The Outlaws would be the team that would start their tournament out on the right foot, jumping out on the Pioneers early and setting the tone early, resulting in putting the Pioneers in an early 22-7 hole. The Pioneers wouldn't let that define them as they started getting to the basket and getting good looks. T...
