  • Darlington nifty Calving cameras

    Robert Lucke|Mar 15, 2017

It seems that the latest technology for ranchers who calf this time of year is a camera or two which saves much stress on getting up during the night several times, putting on warm clothing and checking cows ready to calf. Down the Judith road toward the mighty Missouri, at the Darlington ranch, there are two of these cameras in operation and even though it is too early for Dana and Lisa to know all the pros and cons about having those cameras, so far nothing but good is happening with the camer...

  • St. Patrick's Day on the Res.

    Robert Lucke|Mar 15, 2017

The late 1960’s was a strange time for my family. I was teaching in Glasgow. Mother was getting her feet wet in politics and my sister LouAnn was still in high school. My dad had died in a car accident in front of our Clear Creek cabin in 1964 and we continued to use the cabin even though it was never the same after that accident. As a family we had spent a lot of time in the Flathead, around Whitefish Lake and even more at Lake McDonald. We knew that sooner or later we wanted to at least have a summer home there but in order to make that h...

The regular March City Council meeting was held on March 6. There were no visitors. After the Pledge was recited there was a call to order and the minutes of the last meeting were approved. Bear Paw Development had nothing to report at this meeting. The Montana Department of Transportation sent an amended agreement for care of the highway park. MDOT agreed to p...

    Mar 15, 2017

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is seeking comment on proposed amendments to rules that outline new regulations needed in the battle to contain, detect and prevent the risk of spreading invasive mussels and other aquatic invasive species to other state waters. Comments need to be submitted by March 17. Invasive mussel larvae were detected for the first time in Montana in October 2016 in Tiber Reservoir – and “suspect” detections turned up in Canyon Ferry Reservoir, the Missouri River below Toston Dam, and the Milk River. The discovery trigg...

  • A Simple Spring Cleaning Checklist

    Mar 15, 2017

(StatePoint) It’s the time of year to roll up your sleeves and do some spring cleaning. Experts point out that it’s helpful to streamline the tools you use to do the job and the tasks you seek to accomplish. “An all-purpose cleaner and a tough degreasing agent can be used in so many areas of the home,” says Jeff Devlin, a licensed contractor who’s appeared on several home improvement television shows. Devlin’s first tip: look to reduce the number of products in your cleaning arsenal. “Along with high-quality sprays and cloths, I use one all-p...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert C. Lucke|Mar 15, 2017

Friday is St. Patrick’s Day. It is a time to visit Butte and see the wonderful parade if you can, to wear plenty of green and to cook up a batch of corn beef and cabbage for the family. I have a very good corn beef and cabbage recipe. It even has a secret sauce for the corn beef and for dunk at the table as well. For the secret sauce you simply need equal parts of yellow mustard and brown sugar. Mix together and it should taste more sweet than mustard. Last time I made this corn beef recipe I used cranberry mustard and that was very good w...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Mar 15, 2017

Q: My girlfriend and I are talking about getting married, but we’re reluctant to go ahead because so many of our friends have gotten divorced after only a few years. How can we be sure this won’t happen to us? A: I’m thankful you want your marriage to last—because this desire will be an important part of being sure it will last! Far too many couples, I’m afraid, enter marriage casually or thoughtlessly. But God gave marriage to us, and His perfect plan is for it to be a lifelong commitment of the husband and wife to each other. Jesus said, “Th...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 15, 2017

A month and a half before Elvis Presley died, a reporter interviewing him asked an interesting question: “Elvis, when you first started playing music, you said you wanted to be rich, famous and happy. Are you happy?” His response was simply: “I am lonely…” The interesting thing about this response is that Elvis had achieved everything he had ever desired. For that matter, in terms of wealth, success, and the adoration of millions, Elvis’ success exceeded the desires of most people in general, but despite all of that, he found himself lon...

April Horticulture Reminders Below is a list of reminders from the Montana Gardener’s book of days (EB 165), and other writings by Bob Gough, former MSU Extension Horticultural Specialist. • Prune fruit trees, berry bushes, ornamental trees and summer flowering shrubs before bud swell. Always prune to a branch, because a stub will decay and affect the longevity of the tree. • Graft fruit trees just as the first buds on the tree begin to swell. • Apply dormant oil sprays to fruit trees and other plants when the temperature is expected to rema...
