  • Rhinestone Cowboy Rotary Banquet Invaluable for our Community

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 15, 2023

This year's theme of the Rotary Banquet is Rhinestone Cowboy Rotary. The question would be, what do you wear to that? Shon Tester said, "I found his old Rhinestone Cowboy attire from back in the day" from his Grandfather's closet. And I thought, man, wouldn't it be great to have an event where we could wear this kind of stuff? Because I know I'm not the only one with a closet full of this attire. And so many people come up to me, saying, we don't know what to do. And so here it is in black, and...

  • Wearing O' The Green

    Rev. Dr. Sue King|Mar 15, 2023

It’s time to dig through your dresser drawers for the green T-Shirt, socks, or scarf that you’ll wear on Thursday, March 16th. St. Patrick’s Day is once upon us! If you want to indulge in a traditional Irish meal, you will find a welcome at the Senior Center or the United Methodist Church at noon on March 17th , more on that later in this article. These days it’s common practice to ‘be Irish for a day’ on St. Patrick’s Day, just as many enjoy a smashing a pinata at a ‘ Cinco De Mayo’ party on Mexico’s Independence Day, May 5th. Celebrating the...

  • Why does the celebration of Easter move every year?

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 15, 2023

Easter weekend is fast approaching, landing on April 9th this year. For years, I wondered why it moved around so much. In addition, when I began to learn more about my faith, I wondered why Easter doesn’t always land during the Jewish Passover. The history behind the floating holiday, and the disconnect from its Jewish roots, is fairly interesting and worth sharing as a part of my series on the history of Lent/Easter traditions. A little background is necessary for understanding the whole matter. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection o...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Mar 15, 2023

An ad in the paper got me thinking about what a great school board member would look like. Someone whose goal is to serve the children of the community by working with others to provide the best learning experience for each and every one of them? Or someone more interested in a broader political agenda? Someone who is capable of explaining their position on an issue in a rational way and listening to other points of view? Or someone who can only screech"woke" and start a fight when encountering a person with an opinion different from their...

Aside from the time spent managing her staff, Star fills her days with...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 15, 2023

One of the neat features of Facebook that turns up in my timeline every day is the flashback from the same day in past years. Last week, an 11 year old picture popped up. It was my wife in a borrowed coat, holding our 1 year old daughter, in a corral. It was early March, much colder than we expected, and we were at the Bitz’s home. The picture was taken when we came to Big Sandy to interview for the pastor job. My wife and I had looked at a handful of churches, but we fell in love with the people at Big Sandy Church of God. We also loved the t...

  • A fun pep rally raises $5,300

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 15, 2023

A new community-wide activity occurred one day before the Pioneer boys took off for state. After talking to Ella Jurenka, who in part organized the community side pep rally and fundraiser, she said, "The goal was pretty simple--to try to help take the financial burden off the school, the parents, and the kids. It costs a lot of money to take the kids to tournaments, but the experience for them is priceless. Memories they will never forget. You cannot put a price tag on this experience." "We ask...

  • Big Sandy Pioneers Take 2nd at State

    Mar 15, 2023

The Pioneers' season ended at the State C Boys Championship in Billings this weekend. The Pioneers took 2nd place after a loss against Manhattan Christian in the Championship game, losing by just 9 points. The Pioneers finished their season like they started, working hard, giving it their all, and being strong mentally and physically on the court. The Pioneers will go down in Big Sandy history for being the runners-up at State for the 2022-2023 season, which is something to be proud of. The Big...
