  • Priorities of articles

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 17, 2021

My granddaughter, Dorothea, inspired this article. She and I were driving home when she said, "You own the Mountaineer. It is a very important job." And without skipping a beat, she told me after she was through with grade school and high school that she wanted to own the Mountaineer. "I know how to be a boss! I know how to make decisions." I asked her if she was the boss right now what would be put in the paper. After thinking a bit, she said, "More pictures of kids!" The question of what to...

  • Order Options Available for Homecoming Book

    Mar 17, 2021

The Homecoming 2020 committee continues with the duties associated with the cancellation of Homecoming. We contacted a whole list of people who had offered to help in many ways: decorating, marshaling the parades, handling vendors, dumping garbage, organizing a car show, and more. The entertainers and caterer, along with emcees for both evenings, needed to be alerted to the big change. We had organizations planning to donate many things to make our gathering successful and we wanted them to know straight from us about the decision. Many...

  • Rotary-Commitment to the Community

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 17, 2021

It's been a big project updating the cemeteries records into digital data. "Three years ago, we thought we could get it done between the Rotary banquet and Memorial Day. They laughed, "we're still working on it." They are about 50% done, but the last 50% will go quickly because the newer gravesites are easier to verify. "We feel very good about everything to this point. It's very accurate." They have been meeting Thursday afternoons. I asked if it was fun, and they said, "Yes. It's interesting!"...

We are proud to say we had just one outbreak episode, resulting in no loss of life. We learned a great deal over the past year that helped us improve quality of care moving forward. The fact that our staff does an amazing job was reinforced; BSMC is full of the most caring and fun staff. There are not enough ways and words to show them the appreciation they deserve. • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Mar 17, 2021

With the “spring forward” of the clocks this past weekend, it is a good reminder to give some attention to those forgotten, yet important household tasks which may be overdue. An important one to start with is your fire alarms. While testing the fire alarm with the test button is the first thing you should do, it is also important to check the date of manufacture and replace fire alarms if older than 10 years from the manufacture date. Even though the test button works, it is only confirming the battery and alarm alert system is functioning--it...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 17, 2021

I deal with a handful of hard deadlines every week. By Sunday morning, I have to have a sermon written. By Monday morning, I need to complete two articles and a column. Monday through Thursday I have to have the kids out of bed, dressed, fed, and out the door by 7:30 AM. There are a few others, but I suspect most people deal with similar hard deadlines and goals. The thing is that these deadlines don’t necessarily coincide with the larger objectives of my work and personal life. They are important, but I have to do lots of other things in o...
