  • National Heritage Areas: A Land owner's view

    Mar 29, 2017

"The Mountaineer" in the last several months has had front page stories by a number of people about the good and bad of National Heritage Areas. In reviewing the National Heritage Area being proposed for our part of Montana, we notice that the area has been made smaller. Towns that ought to be concerned yet include Belt, Ulm, Cascade, Sun River, Fort Shaw, Great Falls, Fort Benton, Monarch, Neihart and Vaughn. Those communities will be directly impacted by the National Heritage Area according...

  • End of March brings Many Feathered Friends

    Bruce Auchly|Mar 29, 2017

Those bits of feather, flesh and bones that sing and call forth are among our first signs of spring, even in March’s moodiness. Doesn’t matter if you hunt them in the fall, look for them with longing in the spring, or don’t care to know a robin from a red-tail; they are here and doing their thing. Over-wintering birds are sitting on eggs or getting ready to mate even through this leonine month of wind, cold and snow. A friend on the prairie had seen her covey of Hungarian partridge dwindle in numbers recently until just a couple of birds flushe...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert C. Lucke|Mar 29, 2017

A friend was telling me this week how much she loved March because each day held the promise of spring. I told her I did not like March at all because it always seemed to have more winter than spring and that the March winds are always some of the worst in the year. The day after my talking with her, I experienced those terrible winds in Big Sandy where coming out of the east, there must have been gusts of more than 40mph. Many is the cabin on Clear Creek that I spent nights in March when I thought the roof was going to blow right off. That...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Mar 29, 2017

Q: I’ve finally had to face the fact that my main goal in life is to get other people to like me. I guess most people are like this, but sometimes I’ll go overboard trying to win someone’s favor, even if it means doing something that’s wrong. How can I quit this? A: You’re right; most of us like to be liked. And sadly, we may even do things we know are wrong (like lying about ourselves or doing things we know aren’t right) in order to get someone to like us. But such “friendships” are seldom lasting. The Bible rightly says, “What a person desir...

  • Watch Out for Wildlife on the Roads

    Mar 29, 2017

FWP would like to remind folks to watch for deer (and other animals) on the road, especially during the early morning and early evening hours when both visibility is difficult and animals are sometimes more active. With the recent hour time change, many folks who are commuting are now an hour “forward” and may see more activity. As our deer numbers are continuing to make a comeback across the region, more and more animal-vehicle accidents are bound to occur. In addition, the spring “fawning” season is just around the corner, and deer are oft...
