  • County Commissioner, Darlington Reports on Road Status

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 31, 2021

Three months in Rick Darlington, County Commissioner, reports, “It’s been really good, not a lot of snow removal this winter, with the open winter we saved a lot of money. We have a big job ahead of us to try and get them (the road) all improved. We aren’t going to get it done overnight. It’s going to take a long time” It was Saturday during the grade school basketball games when I finally got up with Rick. He continued to tell me, “We are out there blading them right now.” They have a full crew having hired Lance Cook again. Traci Sibra i...

  • Holy Week Church Services

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 31, 2021

Last year, I preached the Good Friday and Easter Morning Services to an empty room with a camera set up to stream everything to Facebook. All of the other churches in town, and across the country, had the same experience. Like everything that happened in 2020, church services for Easter were cancelled due to the lockdowns. Most churches had had the opportunity to adapt by that point and were streaming their services or running worship online via Zoom or other apps. In the weeks before Easter...

  • Florence Dedman Animal Shelter and Foundation

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 31, 2021

Answering a third grader’s concern about finding a home for all the stray animals, especially feral cats, I thought I would ask first at the Dedman Animal Shelter. Nikki Jones has been the director for three years. She admitted that the topic of homeless animals is a big concern. Currently, they have 40 cats; three are kittens. Adult cats are the hardest to adopt out. They also have nine adult dogs and 25 puppies to give away. They take strays from Big Sandy and have a new program funded by grant funds to fix the problem of feral (wild) c...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Mar 31, 2021

With the coming of spring and warmer weather conditions, snakes are through hunkering down for the winter making human encounters more likely. For many, snakes evoke feelings of uneasiness to outright panic. Montana only has 10 native snake species of which only the Prairie Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) is venomous. Prairie Rattlesnakes are pale green to brown in color with brown or black blotches along the back extending to the tail where they change from blotches to rings. However, pattern and coloration vary widely across snake species and...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 31, 2021

In the ancient world, Jews and Samaritans hated each other. The conflict between the two groups went back hundreds of years and frequently reached levels of venom and spite that we rarely see in our culture. It was common for Jews to kick the dust off their feet before leaving Samaria to make sure they didn’t bring any Samaritan soil with them to their own countries. Jews often crossed the street and spit in the road when they passed Samaritans. Jewish rabbis didn’t even consider Samaritans to be a class of neighbor when discussing the “Lo...

Targeted COVID Package Will Reopen Our Economy One year into this pandemic, Montanans are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our vaccines are safe and effective, COVID cases are falling thanks to the tireless efforts of our frontline health care workers, and Spring is on the horizon. But even with this good news, we still have work to do before we get through the worst public health and economic crisis in generations. • Thoughts with Zoe

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 31, 2021

I find it strange myself. So it's ok if you do too. Easter is only a few days away, and writing a movie review as a way to celebrate Easter just isn't done. I clearly know that Walt Disney movies are not spiritual truth personified, but this one, "Raya and The Last Dragon," speaks truth to me nonetheless. When is the right time to say hope is possible and trust, although it may be challenging to find, possible to practice. I have had too many discussions with community members in person and...
