The Big Sandy Library is celebrating National Library Week from April 7 to 13. This month, they're excited to bring you a variety of events that foster community connections. • The Library of Congress: World's largest library

    Zoe Merrill|Apr 10, 2024

This being Library Week, I thought it might be interesting to visit the world’s largest library: the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. All people can have “access to the creative record of the United States—and extensive materials from around the world—both on-site and online. It is the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office.” It contains “more than 162 million items in nearly every language and format—from ancient Chinese woodblock prints to digital files. Today, the Library preserves treasures s...

  • Confessions of a Book Dragon

    Erik Sietsema|Apr 10, 2024

When I was a kid, I remember being called a “bookworm” on more than one occasion. Last year I read an article that made me believe that the word doesn’t actually apply. Book worms burrow into books and make them their homes. While I read quite a bit and enjoy it, I think that the term “book dragon” is more apt. In stories, dragons sleep on top of vast piles of treasure they collect and hoard. I love books and collect them. I own far more books than I could reasonably read in my lifetime. When my wife and I visit a new city, we look for used...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Apr 10, 2024

Recropping Potential is Poor to Fair for North Chouteau County The Chouteau County Soil Moisture Survey was started by Judee Wargo in 1993 to assist farmers in determining recropping potential on cereal grain stubble. After 31 years, the Chouteau County Extension Office continues to compile data for determining recropping potential and provide the state drought committee with soil moisture information. All of the stubble plots north of the Missouri River excluding the Knees area rated in the fair to poor range. In the northern regions, the...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Apr 10, 2024

“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.” Elie Wiesel, the Hungarian-born American author and Holocaust survivor wrote these words which offer us a unique take on the nature of the world around us. To be indifferent to anything is to negate its value completely. This quote came to mind while reading about the nature of God. According to the Bible, God has certain...

  • Indoor activities to beat boredom

    Emiene|Apr 10, 2024

I was frustrated with the return to cold weather, snow, and rain. I was walking from my kitchen to the living room, and I was thinking to myself how bored I was. I wanted to be outside! I sat down and asked the kids if they wanted to do something. “What?” I said, “I don’t know…any ideas?” Then there was silence…and I realized I was trying to win a battle against their electronic devices, which meant I would lose. What child wants to hang out with their parent over their phone/computer/gaming device or TV? So, I decided to research fun...

  • Why you should take advantage of this service at BSMC

    Jessica Ophus|Apr 10, 2024

Last year, Big Sandy Medical Center began offering a service called Patient Directed Testing. This is an opportunity for you as the patient, to choose which labs you’d like to have collected without needing a provider’s order to do so. For example, let’s say one of your longest friends just learned he has prostate cancer and it makes you think long and hard about those suggested lab tests that you should be getting done regularly. After years of avoidance, you finally call to get in with your regular doctor and they are scheduling 6 month...

  • Pioneer Tracksters compete in huge meet in Lewistown

    Apr 10, 2024

The Pioneer track team had their first meet this past week in Lewistown. There were 28 teams at this track meet, schools from all classes all across the state. There were so many athletes in each event, that I thought I would not only share the Big Sandy Pioneers names and times as it showed up in the results, but I will also share with you how many athletes were in each event. I was blown away with how many there were in each event. Girls events: 100m: (87 runners) Heather Frank: 15.38 Lainey...
