He was born Aaron Pursley on a cold windy day in the foothills of Mt. Centennial in 1935. Very early on his father started calling him Duke and it has been with him all of his life. Duke's mother and father were James and Mildred Pursley. One time Duke was in the hospital in Great Falls when a nurse came in and told him there was only one Duke (referring to John Wayne's nickname of Duke). Duke Pursley looked at her and said, "There is only one Duke and that is me." Duke's Dad ran the Nygard...
In 2015 and 2016 Alvin Bitz hit a bunch of landmarks. He and his wife Dee celebrated their fiftieth Wedding Anniversary on September18, 2015. Alvin was made fifty years a Mason on March 15, 2016 and if that was not enough Alvin turned 75 years of age on April 4, 2016 That is a huge amount of events to celebrate in a short period of time. Alvin and Dee seem to have weathered those events just fine. As to fifty years a Mason, Al celebrated the Treasure Lodge Number 95 becoming 100 years old on...
A few years ago Loren Jenkins gave “The Mountaineer” a stack of old high school reports about how some of the Big Sandy founding fathers got here and about their lives in and around Big Sandy. High School students interviewed old timers. From time to time we will print some of those reports just so they won’t be lost to history. And, they are great stories of old times right around here! Mary Cameron was born in 1884 in the Black Isle of Scotland. When Mary was nine years old, her family decided to come to the United States to seek new oppor...

We all know we should do more of this but we do not seem to do it. It is to drink more water. Although there are many people who do drink water as their beverage of choice, many others could definitely increase our water intake. But why? You have heard all of these before but here they are again as a reminder. Water: - Fuels muscles by transporting oxygen, fat and glucose to keep them working. Muscles contain 75 percent water so a lot of water is required to maintain that level or even more to gain muscle. - Maintains good blood volume which...
I do love the spring. In the beautiful Bear Paw Mountains there is an abundance of early spring flowers that just make the coldest of hearts beat warmly in the soft spring sun. In my yard at the house, I have seen most everything coming up from a long winter sleep. I always worry because again this year there was no snow cover to protect the roots of plants, just leaves I had not raked last fall. First to come up are the poppies. Not only do they look healthy but there is a whole new bunch this year in another part of the garden. I love poppies...
Whether you’re looking to sell your house or just want to make a smart update that’s worth your time and money, consider a design trend that is both attractive and proven to add value to your home: manufactured stone. “Manufactured stone is exploding in popularity, in both exteriors and interiors,” says Phil Wengerd, vice president of Market Strategies for ProVia, a leading manufacturer of home building products. The numbers agree. Manufactured stone veneer projects offer a 92.9 percent cost recovery, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs....
Compost As soon as it warms and dries a little we can finish cleaning the flower beds and put leaves and stems in the compost pile. Any thatch and grass clippings can also be used as compost or as mulch. Any weeds or trimmings can be added. Mix everything together and add a few shovels full of good garden soil as you are mixing it to get started working. In a few months you will have pure garden gold. Lawn care We are beginning to hear lawn mowers and garden tillers. The soil is still wet but by the middle of this week, it may be good and ready...
Charlotte L. (Allen) Ray, 93, passed away at the Big Sandy Medical Center on April 5, 2016. Born on January 21, 1923, Charlotte was the second daughter of Claude James and Selma (Peterson) Allen, joining a sister Grace. Another sister, Leone, was added five years later. The small family raised sheep north of Havre where the closest neighbors were the Springers. Times were tough, so Claude Allen eventually changed professions, becoming a policeman, and the family moved into Havre. Charlotte worked at Owl Drug’s soda fountain. Losing her m...
It is fun to watch my 2-year old boy eat. Anything with frosting or sauce is immediately spread all over his face, shirt, pants, and anything within arms reach. When we visit restaurants, I often want to put down a tarp to catch his crumbs and splashes. Imagine if my boy, covered in food, were to turn to me and complain that I had a speck of food in my beard. It would be funny, largely because a child did it. The same messiness in an adult, with the same acknowledgement of food in my beard, would be funny for a different reason. In the Sermon...

The following article about Fort Assinniboine as seen through the eyes of Dr. John Carroll was written for “The Mountaineer” in 1930. Dr. Carroll was slated to go on an adventure to the North Pole during his tenure at Fort Assinniboine but did not go. The article was given “The Mountaineer” by Midge Edwards. Why coal banks are not capitalized in the story remains a mystery. It was 51 years ago, June 17, 1879 that Dr. John V. Carroll, now a resident of Great Falls but at that time a private soldier in the 18th United States Infantry, stepped...
