Alan Merrill, president of Montana Farmer's Union, said that Montana Farmers Union had a very complete paper commissioned on the impact of Climate Change on Montana's Agriculture Economy. The report was written by Power Consulting Inc. "The Mountaineer" is including a summary of the paper for several reasons. We are, above all, an agricultural community. If even a portion of the report turns out to be valid, both farmers and ranchers need to be in the know on this important subject. Second, a pe...
Morning coffee at the Bear Paw Bakery requires the mettle of a Montana driver The car acts like a drunk on the dirt road Sloppy as a warm chocolate bar I relax the steering wheel the way I learned at 14 to let go and give in to invisible great forces Press the accelerator in my vintage Lucchese boot to ten m.p.h. with no braking To keep from sliding into the roadside parade of young pheasants behind their mother Down the road a cottontail wasn’t so lucky In polite farmer protocol its flattened body has been moved to the far side of the road A...
At the April 7 Big Sandy City Council meeting there were two visitors present. After the pledge was recited and the minutes approved there were no comments. There was no sheriff’s report. Concerning the Wastewater Treatment project, the city is trying to get it finished. Regarding the old hotel on Main Street, the assessment of the building was received and was much worse for asbestos etc. then had been thought. It was decided that the City is not going to negotiate to take over the hotel. There is just not enough grant money to cover what w...
VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED during the Recycling Bonanza on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Dedman Foundation Animal Shelter parking area at 2400 High St in Fort Benton. Any amount of time you could be there would be greatly appreciated. With the annual Recycling Bonanza coming up, the theme of decluttering and organization comes to mind. With the weather having been as nice as it has been, this probably does not feel like the time to be Spring cleaning inside. However, when those spare moments arise or the weather forces y...
I have reinvented a new taste treat for myself. Since becoming 75 I am trying to live the life that I want to live, rather than the life I should live. In order to do that I have started eating large gum drops coated with sugar. I want very large gum drops and want them to taste just like they tasted when I was a boy and would go to the Lyric Theater and buy them in boxes at the counter. My staple for show time eats was a sack of heavily buttered popcorn, a large coke, a box of gum drops and a couple of bags of peanuts. First I would polish...

My daughter loves wearing dresses, jewelry, nail polish, and shoes of every style/shape/color. She loves to be surrounded by pink, frilly, sparkly, and loud things. New dresses are her idea of heaven. She will often come to me with some piece of jewelry she has been given or an outfit in order to explain why this is her favorite thing in the world. No amount of explaining seems to be adequate to help her understand that everything can’t be her favorite. That’s okay, because she is full of excitement and pride, which is more important than tho...

Keep an eye out for Grass Tetany Grass tetany is a metabolic disease of cattle associated with grazing lush, green pasture. The condition is caused by low blood concentrations of magnesium, which is a required mineral for cattle. When pastures are growing rapidly in the spring, grass may not contain adequate amounts of magnesium to meet requirements. High potassium and crude protein concentrations found in rapidly growing forage complicate the grass tetany issue, because both interfere with the absorption of magnesium from the rumen. Magnesium...
