Don’t Forget to Monitor for Cutworms in Early Two major cutworm species, the western and the army cutworm, are serious but sporadic pests for Montana producers. Outbreaks can occur when cutworm populations are high and weather conditions are favorable for survival. Outbreaks do not necessarily occur in successive years. Larvae of either species generally are not active above ground on bright, sunny days. They can be found just below ground by scraping the soil surface lightly. • Earth Day 2024: Planet vs Plastics

    Zoe Merrill|May 1, 2024

I was taking garbage to the garbage bins in Big Sandy. This time, instead of just throwing the garbage bag, I looked at the garbage and thought about how I never think often enough about this issue of waste. I just dump. That is when I remembered reading about the theme for Earth Day 2024: Planet vs. Plastics. We just take our garbage to the bins. It’s staggering to think about the sheer volume of waste we generate. The largest portion of our garbage is food, with a mind-boggling 38-40% of the food we purchase ends up in the trash. Equally a...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|May 1, 2024

For the last several years, I have participated in a cycling fundraiser to raise money to fight children’s cancer. In recent years, I have tried to take on what is called a zone training strategy. I train at different heart rate intensities to improve different aspects of my heart and lung health. In the long term, those impro...

    May 1, 2024

The Pioneer Tracksters were in Shelby this past weekend at a track meet with 18 other teams. Despite the challenging weather conditions and timing delays due to technical issues, the team performed admirably. Head Coach Wendy Taylor said, “The track meet was wet, and the kids did great under the weather conditions and also the timing delays that we experienced. They had problems with their electronic timing system, so everything was hand time. Those don’t go into the Athletic.net as official times. The Pioneers have 3 more track meets (we...

  • An Incredible Life

    Zoe Merrill|May 1, 2024

This weekend, I was again reminded of the value of a person's life at a funeral and realized I must express what made it so incredible. First, Don Heikkila was an incredible man. Second, his family was incredible-one in a million-and third, his staff were incredible as well. What makes for an incredible life? Don Heikkilla was born with Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation, so his life was not easy. He was always required to use a wheelchair. At the age of twelve, he was moved into an...
