  • Big Sandy Rotary Flags Main Street

    May 2, 2018

If you drive down town Big Sandy you may notice new banners. Rotary has purchased and placed the banners on main street hoping to create an appealing welcome to our fabulous small town. They are patriotic, red, white and blue with a welcome sign on some of them. After discussing what kind of banners Rotary wanted these fit the bill best. • Big Sandy High School Carnival a Great Success

    Zoe Merrill|May 2, 2018

It was a week for children. Traditionally the Big Sandy Carnival has been happening every year for at least 80 years. I talked to a woman in her 90's who remembers going when she was a child. There was also a Country Store which was a silent auction, Baked goodies and coffee if all you...

    Zoe Merrill|May 2, 2018

Grade school concerts are one of the best concerts around. It's a wonderful place to enjoy the little things in life that make it worth living. I asked some of the kids if they liked their spring concert there were a chorus of "NO" and then a chorus of Yes. I laugh out loud. One said she would rather be...

  • Mr. Lucke, my High School English teacher

    Zoe Merrill|May 2, 2018

I first met Robert Lucke when I was a Sophomore at Glasgow High School. He was my English teacher. I was a very shy girl. My friends remember the first time they saw me, I was walking down the hall with my eyes glued to the floor, running my hand along the lockers so I wouldn't run into anyone. I hated English. I now know I had a learning disability, but back then I was just stupid. I couldn't spell at all and therefore couldn't read. I remember standing in front of the class trying to read and...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|May 2, 2018

Soil Acidity is Causing Crop Failure in some Montana Fields: Is yours next? Farmers in several Montana counties are experiencing nearly complete yield loss in portions of their fields due to soil acidity (low pH). Standard top 6-inch soil pH testing may not definitively identify soil acidity problems. Most fields with low pH problem areas also have larger areas with higher pH that buffer the pH value when soil samples submitted to labs are mixed from 6-8 subsamples per field. Also, the lowest pH is generally in the top 2 to 3 inches, not the to...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|May 2, 2018

I have been busy for the last few weeks. Between rushing around to deal with various obligations and efforts, I have hardly slowed down at all. When I have, I am finding myself tired, which prompts me to use my relaxation time for things like watching television or mindlessly surfing the internet. My energy to spend on reading or more edifying pursuits is limited. This morning, when I sat down to write this column, I discovered that my mind is blank.
