  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|May 11, 2016

It is that wonderful month of May. My upstairs bedroom window has been surrounded by white apple blossoms for most of two weeks now and it is glorious. I love to get up early, about a half hour before dawn or even earlier and go out to the back terrace and sit and listen to the birds making a joyful noise to herald a new day. That is a beautiful way to start any day. My dog Fallie, who hates it outside with a passion, even has enjoyed this week with the temperatures in the 70’s. He walks slowly around the terrace and smells individual lilac l...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|May 11, 2016

I recently watched a lecture delivered to a group of hospice workers that was being delivered by a retired teacher who was dealing with terminal cancer. He opened his talk with a quote: “I can complain that the rose bush has thorns, or I can be grateful that the thorn bush has flowers.” It’s a profound statement on its own, but given that it was shared by a gentleman who was living out his last days, dealing with chemotherapy, in failing health, and witnessing his family and friends mourning his impending death; the quote is noticeably weigh...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|May 11, 2016

Q: I guess we’re what you’d call “Christmas and Easter Christians,” since those are about the only times we make it to church. But what’s wrong with that? We head to our lake cottage most weekends, and isn’t the Sabbath supposed to be a day of rest? A: You’re right, up to a point; God knows we need rest, and one of the reasons He established the Sabbath was to give us rest. One of the Ten Commandments states, “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day … you shall not do any work” (Deuteronomy 5:13-14). But God’s...

  • Low Maintenance Flower Garden Care

    Melinda Myers|May 11, 2016

Grow a beautiful flower garden with minimal care by investing a bit of time at the start of the season to reduce on-going care. Always match flowers to the growing conditions and the care you are willing to provide. Low maintenance plants need minimal or no deadheading and staking. This means you’ll be growing good-looking plants with little effort on your part. And if the plants are suited to the growing conditions and resistant to common pests you’ll be doing less work managing insect and disease problems. Further reduce your workload by sele...
