Thomas Dilworth has taken over management of the Kracklin' Kamut enterprise of Bob Quinn. Robert Lucke|Jun 8, 2016

In late May there was a meeting in Valier, Montana. Over 200 people showed up to talk about bears, both black and grizzly, coming onto their old stomping grounds on the Montana prairies. We know that the Montana prairie was the first home to bears in this country from the notes of explorers like Lewis and Clark who reported they had bear troubles all through Montana. Now those bears reside for the most part in the Rocky Mountain Front from the Rattlesnake wilderness area, to the Bob Marshall,...

  • An eclectic array of above average eateries

    Robert Lucke|Jun 8, 2016

Montana is filled with really great eating places. Only most of the really great ones are not readily known about. Like one fellow said, when having a memorable meal at a cabin by Duck Lake, “It was just a tiny cabin but it had some of the best food I have ever eaten.” Some of these eating spots are connected with bars, some are simply dives or holes in the walls and some are very grand and beautiful restaurants the most everyone has heard of. How about starting with Ciao Mambo in Whitefish? It is in a dive like building but if you love the...

Veterinary feed directive information for producers The MSU Extension Beef Cattle Program will be conducting educational meetings throughout the state starting in late July. Antibiotic use in livestock and humans continues to undergo greater scrutiny as antibiotic resistance evolves. Antibiotic resistance is a main reason for implementation of the new VFD rule. First, the rule deals with antibiotics fed to animals, not injectable antibiotics. Secondly, not all antibiotics currently fed to animals are included in the rule. The FDA has published...

Their bites can potentially leave more than an annoying itch; and this year many Americans are taking notice. In fact, nearly seven out of ten (68 percent) want to go a step beyond “just spraying their body,” including treating their deck areas or back yards, in order to combat mosquitoes, according to a recent survey by Westham Co., a global mosquito control product manufacturer. To fully protect your family from mosquito bites this season, combine bac...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Jun 8, 2016

Between work, the kids, and various hobbies I am pretty busy. As a result of the hectic life I live, I often don’t get to the various tasks I commit to doing around the house. For example, I set out to fix my car a while back. I cleared an afternoon and got to work. Except, I didn’t finish it up. So, a week later I got back to it. Again, I didn’t manage to get the car running. Then it snowed, so I put it off again. After enough time passed, my wife began asking me when I would get the car running. I guessed at a date, which then went by witho...

    Jun 8, 2016

State health officials are encouraging parents to talk to their children about the dangers of substance abuse. According to Vicki Turner of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) Prevention Resource Center, studies show that parental disapproval of underage drinking is the number one reason youth chose not to drink. “Teens do listen to their parents,” Turner said. “And, they listen to their parents more than anyone else, including their friends. • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Jun 8, 2016

Q: I know you’d probably say we ought to be honest and always tell the truth, but in my experience no one really gets ahead if they act like that all the time. You have to cut a few corners if you’re going to be successful, no matter what the Ten Commandments say. A: You’ve probably looked around you and seen people who appeared to be getting ahead by being less than honest—and in the short term perhaps they were. But at what cost? In the long term they are on a dead-end road—and so will you be, if you decide to follow their example. You see,...
