  • "Mountaineer" Father of the Year, Bob Nelson

    Robert Lucke|Jun 14, 2017

There are plenty of outstanding fathers in the Big Sandy area. For some time, now "The Mountaineer" has named a mother of the year at Mother's Day but this is the first time we have started a new tradition of naming a father of the year for Father's Day. We had a list of around 8 names for father of the year and showed that list to several people and in every case, Bob Nelson's name was at the top of the list. So, it is most apropos to name Bob Nelson as "The Mountaineer's first father of the ye...

  • The American Flag

Contributed by Big Sandy American Legion Auxiliary|Jun 14, 2017

Did you know that at military funerals, the 21 gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776. Have you ever noticed how the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day! The 1st fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The 2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans...

  • Rain, Rain Go Away

    Bruce Auchly|Jun 14, 2017

Back in third grade, I remember reading a story about a little boy who grew tired of rain ruining his weekends. So he chanted: Rain, rain go away. And he got his wish. The sky cleared, the sun came out and in a few weeks it was dreadful; too much heat, everything dried up. We have been tempted to repeat the little boy's cry this past month as it seemed our soggy weather would never end. Lawns are out of control, picnics are ruined and rivers run muddy. The first two are inconveniences, stuff to...

  • Getting By

    Janel Barber|Jun 14, 2017

“Rhubarbed” out because you have made just about every recipe you can think of with your rhubarb but do not want the rest to go to waste? Canning it may have come to mind. And, then, think of all of the rest of the produce that will be showing up all too soon. Do you have all of your canning supplies ready for canning season? Particularly, how long has it been since you had your pressure canner dial-gauge tested? Why have your pressure canner dial-gauge tested? A dial-gauge should be tested for accuracy. Inaccuracies can happen over time due to...

  • Big Sandy Barracudas results from the Shelby Meet

    Jun 14, 2017

Barracudas missed second place by 27 points this weekend, finishing with a 5th place. 27 of the 44 Barracudas faced the cool, windy conditions in Shelby this weekend, along with several of their supporters! This was a one day, timed finals meet in a yard pool. Again, we had three first time swimmers, Henry Merrill, MJ Griffith, and Lindsey Cline. We had a couple swimmers DQ with goggle issues, a couple swimmers forget to dive in or THOUGHT they false started, and a swimmer get a stomach bug halfway through, but all and all it was a good weekend...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Jun 14, 2017

Last year, during the heat of the presidential elections, I was browsing my facebook feed when I came across an article making very serious accusations against a prominent politician. It caught my attention, so I clicked and read. Within 3 minutes, I figured out that the linked article was from a ‘parody’ website that posts false news stories. The crazy thing about it was that there was no hint of parody to the article. I discovered the truth by googling the web site name and reading the wikipedia entry about it. Lots of those websites exi...
