  • New library named for Jeff Reichelt

    Robert Lucke and Janis Kaiser|Jun 21, 2017

When Janis Kaiser gave the Kaste building to the library in 2007, she thought they would use her building as a new library. She was pleasantly surprised when a whole new building came alive where the Kaste Store had stood. The Kaste family were old timers in Havre and Big Sandy. Janis' grandfather had a cigar store in Havre right next to the Havre Hotel. In 1942 her father Walt Kaste started a store in Big Sandy where the Senior Citizens Center is today and then moved to the McNamara Big Store...

  • Ursus Horribilis aptly named

    Robert Lucke|Jun 21, 2017

The Latin name for a grizzly bear is Ursus Horribilis and it gets that name because it is one of the few animals in the world that exhibited not the slightest fear of man in many situations and it was only after the great hunting guns were invented did man have much of a chance against the grizzlies. Montana has always been grizzly bear country but for many people the notion of those great bears out here on the prairie was unbelievable. Grizzlies belong in Yellowstone to a small degree but...

  • They're sure cute, but please leave baby animals alone

    Jun 21, 2017

Each spring, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks receives several calls from people who have picked up deer fawns or other wildlife. According to FWP Region 7 Warden Ryan Karren, a California couple traveling through the area this weekend saw a new fawn off the road and stopped and picked it up. They transported the fawn in their vehicle for about two hours on the woman's lap. "Mother had abandoned it, and it was starving," the couple told Karren. FWP no longer accepts, holds or rehabilitates deer...

Mayor Stiles reported that there were two visitors present at the regular June 8 meeting of the City Council. An individual has a bunch of lots in Big Sandy and was complaining about taxes and looking for tax relief. There was some discussion about this matter. The Big Sandy website is up. Mayor Stiles said that anyone wanting to get on the website should go to townofbigsandy.com. “We are learning and growing with the website,” said Mayor Sti...

Below is a writing shared with friends and family after the tragic news of my Aunt’s passing. Montana being the small state it is, news of my Aunt’s passing spread quickly. Former schoolmates, friends, and acquaintances were soon sending family members messages of condolences. Many of the messages also shared the individual’s feelings of utter shock and disbelief. I felt the need to provide some sort of response or explanation so that there could at least be an attempt to begin to understand the lingering questions “Why did this happen?” “How d...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Jun 21, 2017

I first got to know Ace Powell, the famous western artist when he got a commission from Havre Federal Savings and Loan to paint three paintings about the prairies around Havre. He came to Havre and my uncle Al took Ace around to sketch scenes that might be used in the paintings. I would see Ace every morning at the Lou Lucke Company where he would be sitting in the so called “President’s Chair”. He would have a dozen little note cards with him and would always be drawing a bear or a teepee or a cabin or an Indian on a horse or something. When...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Jun 21, 2017

There is a story in the Old Testament about a prophet named Elijah. Elijah’s job was to speak on God’s behalf to the people of Israel, a job that often made him unpopular in a time where traditional Jewish religion was very unpopular in ancient Israel. The day after Elijah experiences the most spectacular victory of his life, he leaves a party where God’s people are celebrating the end of a long drought and returning to their belief in God. Elijah is forced into hiding to escape assassins sent by Israel’s queen, Jezebel. It’s interesti...

Blue Green Algae Poisoning in Livestock The following overview of blue green algae poisoning in livestock was written by Rachel Endecott (MSU Extension Beef Cattle Specialist). Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are photosynthetic bacteria that live and grow in aquatic environments. Many species exist: some species are harmless, while others can affect the nervous system and liver function of livestock. Large blooms of cyanobacteria can occur when conditions are favorable, leading to elevated concentrations in water sources. When livestock or oth...
