  • News on Mountaineer printing

    Zoe Merrill|Jul 19, 2023

So what’s going on with the Mountaineer? The Havre Daily’s “motherboard,” which they use to make the pages in the paper, is down. Havre is sending their paper to Cheyenne, Wyoming. We learned about it on Monday, July 10th, right before the Mountaineer was due at the printers. The problem was Cheyenne won’t print a six-page paper, and we couldn’t make an eight-page paper that quickly, let alone we didn’t have enough ads to cover the cost. So many newspapers have closed their doors in Montana, and there aren’t a lot of places to get the paper p...

  • Big Sandy Farmers Market Returns

    Erik Sietsema|Jul 19, 2023

The Big Sandy Farmers Market kicked off its year last Thursday afternoon, attracting a substantial crowd despite threat of thunderstorms at the start. The weather scared several venders away that afternoon, but several stayed the course for the afternoon. The market is entering its second year with some improvements over last summer that should be a treat to locals. Donita Darlington and Paula Amsbaugh worked together to organize the market since its inception. I spoke with Donita at her booth,...

  • Reflecting on the past year at BSMC

    Ron Wiens|Jul 19, 2023

It was July 11th of last year that I first walked through the doors of Big Sandy Medical Center to start work as the interim CEO. After only a few hours on the job, I realized what a challenge it would be to keep this organization from going down the same path as so many other rural hospitals succumb to, that is, to be purchased and assimilated into a much larger hospital system. Yet I soon learned that I was working with some of the best hospital staff in the state. Their dedication, amazing problem-solving skills, and compassionate love and...

  • Green Acres

Mowing to Manage Invasive and Noxious Weeds Mowing is often overlooked as a weed management tool, but it can be effective if done properly. For best results, timing and frequency of mowing should be based upon the weed’s biology and growth stage. More specifically, when and how often to mow depends upon the weed’s method of reproduction —seed only or seed plus creeping roots. Weeds that reproduce only by seed are best controlled when mown just prior to or during flowering. If done at this time, these species usually only need to be mowed once... Full story

  • July 13th City Council Meeting

    Jul 19, 2023

All city council members meet on Thursday, July 13, for a regular meeting. Krystle Miller was a little late due to an accident on the highway. Law enforcement was held up entirely because of the accident, so there was no Sheriff’s present to report. Rich Jesperson reported five new grant opportunities for the new Big Sandy Pool. Further information will be coming forth. KLJ reported that some extra paperwork was necessary to be redone for NCMRWA. It won’t affect the city; just sifting the dollar amounts into the different categories. There is...

  • Just Thinkin'

    Arnold Hokanson|Jul 19, 2023

Editor’s note: We are fast approaching fire season. I found this old Mountaineer article written by Arnold Hokanson and decided to run it to remind us all to be careful and watchful because of all the rain we now have amble fuel for fire this summer. Take the necessary precautions. Don’t drive in tall dry grass. Lubricate all equipment. Don’t work in the fields when it gets hot and drier. Never throw your cigarette out the window. The clouds rolled, in the early evening of one recent hot summer day. The few raindrops that fell in a fast and f...

  • Need a new & exciting adventure? Explore the Montana Book Trail

    Erik Sietsema|Jul 19, 2023

Anyone who knows me, knows I love books. I collect them like a little kid collects baseball cards. Whenever my family travels, I find myself plotting our path based on the bookstores we will be able to visit. A few weeks ago, my wife and I took our daughter to Missoula for a doctor's appointment. While we were there, we visited an independent bookstore, and I found something exciting: the Montana Bookstore Trail. The trail was put together by independent bookstore owners in an effort to promote...

  • The Barracudas are headed to Divisionals next week

    Jul 19, 2023

Barracudas 3rd in Harlem, 4th in Columbia Falls It was an especially exciting meet in Harlem for a handful of Barracudas July 1&2, beginning with eight year old Ruthie Boyce who made her debut on the blocks. She gave it her all with some guidance from Harley LaBuda in the 25m and 50m freestyle, as well as the 25m backstroke. Cassia Butler captured her first-ever women's high point award following a nail-biting finish in the 100m freestyle. After losing her goggles and getting them back in to...
