  • Vandalism in two Counties

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

A weekly paper isn't the first place you read to get recent news. It was on Dustin Gasvoda's Facebook page first, and then KRTV covered the story, but it's too important for the community not to at least let everyone know what happened to them. There was further damage done to the Blaine County road equipment as well. I can not get information from the two counties' Sheriff's Departments either, as it is "still under investigation ."And that is all they will tell you, so the reports on Facebook...

  • Big Sandy's Farmer's Market and Vendors Fair

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

Paula Amsbaugh and Donita Darlington are co-sponsors of the newly formed Big Sandy Farmers Market and Vendors Fair. It runs every Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 till the end of September.Seeing both of them give the other credit for the event was interesting. So the picture is the only picture I have with both of them. I wanted to support the event and give credit where credit is due. They had an idea and didn't just sit around and talk about it over coffee. They did the work, and the market became a...

  • The Hungry Heifer expands to Catering

    Erik Sietsema|Aug 24, 2022

Big Sandy's own Casten and Katie Heppner have launched the Hungry Heifer, the food truck arm of their growing catering business. Katie has been catering for around 8 years, covering harvest meals and events. She explains that "...it kind of just got so big that we needed to become mobile. Then we decided to put the food truck together. It changed from just using it for harvest meals, to using it for events and fairs and weddings and all kinds of celebrations." Over the last year, the addition...

  • Lance Rutledge puts his mark on his last Chouteau County Fair

    Erik Sietsema|Aug 24, 2022

Incoming Big Sandy HS Senior Lance Rutledge picked up second place in class with his heifer at this year's Chouteau County Fair 4-H competition. After 13 years of competing in 4-H events, Lance has grown as a person through his participation in various competitions and activities. The Montana 4-H website identifies the organization as aiming to help young people learn leadership, citizenship, and life skills. During my conversation with Lance at the 4-H barn on Sunday, he spent far more time...

Emerging Winter Wheat, Grasshopper Pests and Systemic Seed Treatment The following information was prepared by Kevin Wanner (MSU Extension Entomologist). Emerging winter wheat can be particularly vulnerable to damage by grasshoppers. The larger adult stage grasshoppers are difficult to control and move into emerging winter wheat fields from surrounding grassy areas. Grasshopper treatment thresholds for emerging winter wheat are 3-7 per square yard within the field, or 11-20 per square yard around the margin. Populations in these ranges will...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 24, 2022

Dear Big Sandy Community: I do not typically feel the need to provide public clarification on personal matters; however, recent events have influenced me to do so. I devoted the past 10 years to Big Sandy Medical Center (BSMC) in more ways than is commonly known. I never asked for praise nor boasted about all I did. I grew up with BSMC as a major part of my life; and its success has been my focus for the last decade. In 2014, when the Board then (which included Gordon Moes, Dianna Webster, and Sharon Robertson) chose me as CEO, they gave me an...

  • Planning for the 2022 Harvest Festival is well underway

    Aug 24, 2022

This year's event will take place on Sept 17 from 1-10 at the Catholic Church. The PCW (Parish Council of Women) of the Catholic Church hosts the event as their only fundraiser of the year. PCW offers scholarships to local seniors, helps to care for the church, and provides funeral services and other services throughout the community. Harvest Fest 2021 was a huge success, thanks to this generous community! The event was held with an understanding that at least 50% of the proceeds would go to...

  • Big Sandy Baracuddas are trying a new fundraiser: Golf Scramble Beavercreek Golf Course

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

This September 3rd, a golf scramble at Beavercreek Golf Course in Havre will be a fun and new way for the Barracudas to raise funds for the team and support the new swimming pool fund. Registration opens at 7:30 am, with a Shotgun starting at 9:30 am. There are four people on a team with a team fee of $400. They can pay in advance or pay that morning. It covers everything: the green fees, lunch, and carts. I thought it sounded like fun. And I don’t even golf. I think it’s the word shotgun scramble. I’d form a team, but a new beginner slowing th...

  • Pioneer Pen

Community Engagement Throughout my career in education, regardless of position or the school served, one common theme has typically risen to the forefront. That theme was and is that when we work together, when the school district and the community that it serves work together in support of one another, everyone wins and those relationships and the support born from them, grow. There are many examples of how this plays out throughout the year…booster club and other parent and community member organizations working together with the school in a...

  • Pioneer Football works towards State Title

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 24, 2022

Assistant Coach Tucker Taylor visited with me by phone. I asked so State Champions? Tucker Taylor said, "I think that is primarily the goal of the boys, the community, the coaches. Everybody, but ultimately we are going to have to practice and work hard. We are going to have to put some egos aside. Right now, we have all the talent in the world to go and win the state championship. As a coaching staff and the players, it's up to us to really buy into the team. It will be hard work and not make a...
