You say tomato, I say tamot or in this case, you draw a tomato, I draw a tamoto. As Big Sandy High School's new art teach Monika Winderl explains it, "We all have different levels of ability it doesn't mean we don't have potential. The Tomato I draw may look very different from the tomato you might draw but, that doesn't mean it's not a tomato". These are the kind of beliefs that guide her teaching style. She tries to look for the potential in each of her students as she pushes them to step...
Many Chouteau County producers research their winter wheat varieties in the spring and their spring crop varieties in the Fall. As a result, it is time to let producers know about a new malt barley called Buzz. Malt Barley is generally rejected when seed is not plump and/or protein is too high. Hockett, a malt barley released by MSU, generally has stable plumps and good yield under dryland conditions. However, grain protein can be too high. Hockett is also slow to germinate, complicating the malting process. The malt quality of Hockett is also...
Last year Audrey Sipler, a Big Sandy High School student, organized and taught a children's dance class. Audrey was nervous at first because she wasn't sure how many kids were going to enter the class. Lucky for her though, she ended up with plenty of adorable kids. She had five 3-5-year olds and eight 6-11-year olds. She enjoyed all the children and was impressed with their skills for not have a lot of dance experience. Last year she picked 4 songs for the kids to choose from. Songs included...
High sodium consumption raises blood pressure which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Blood pressure begins decreasing within weeks on average when salt/sodium intake is reduced. Although we all need a small amount of sodium for our bodies to work properly, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests less than 2300 milligrams (mg) per day. People 51 and older, African Americans and people with high blood pressure, diabetes and/or with chronic kidney disease should limit sodium intake to 1500 mg per day. Recognizing that...

Ancient rabbis used to tell a story about the Jewish exodus from slavery in Egypt. At the climax of the story, God parted the Red Sea so that His people could cross on dry land and escape from the pursuing Egyptian army. In the story, two men were walking along and complaining. They were looking down at the deep mud that they were trudging through, where the vast sea had been before. They complained about the mud on their legs and feet. They complained about all the walking. They complained about their clothes getting messy. The whole time they...

Big Sandy junior high football players may dream of the day they suit up under the lights for the varsity but their 2019 schedule might make their senior counterparts jealous. The younger Pioneers host nearby rivals Box Elder and Highwood amidst a five-game homestand to begin this season. Meanwhile, the senior high team buses as far as Grenora, North Dakota, for a September contest and will not face any Golden Triangle foes until the playoffs, if at all. "I'm sure these guys will be pretty...
Call it an embarrassment of riches for the Big Sandy junior high volleyball squad this year. Nineteen girls will play for the Pioneers under the tutelage of Shersteen Cline, who coached the high school varsity last season. "They like being a part of something. They like being with their friends," Cline said, considering the reasons for the turnout. "They get to burn off some of that energy before they go home." Cline did not initially plan to coach, having had a baby in June, but when the...
Faye (Stevens) Christofferson of the Kenilworth area recalls needing to do 5 different things at 10 different places at the same time while harvesting with her husband Orval in the mid 1960’s. She says she has no idea how she, “ever did that with a tiny baby and two toddlers!” Faye and Orval often travelled to a place near Tiber Dam, where Orval’s brother farmed. They harvested there, as well as harvesting their own crop in Big Sandy. Over the years the Christoffersons piled up lots of beautiful wheat and many family milestones. Tammy was bor...
It takes a village to raise a child they say. It takes a community to withstand all the difficulties of time. A community bands together over the years if it wants to survive 110 years. The Mountaineer is 110 years old. Older than the homestead pictures I took. The Mountaineer has gone through many changes, but always serving the same community. I love unique pictures, this one of a blank with old rusty nails which may be helping to hold the old building together, reminds me of the Mountaineer....
