  • A Tale of Two Superintendents

    Robert Lucke|Aug 31, 2016

It was Superintendent Brad Moore’s idea first. He told “The Mountaineer” that a Big Sandy native, Scott Chauvet was the superintendent of his high school in Manhattan, Montana. Not only that but Moore is the superintendent of Chauvet’s home school system in Big Sandy. Now that probably does not happen very often. Not only that but neither claims to want the other’s job. Moore wants to stay in Big Sandy and Chauvet is happy in Manhattan, Montana style, as the old commercial for eating more beef used to say about Manhattan. We thought it would...

    Robert Lucke|Aug 31, 2016

By the time these words are being read, Maddy Reichelt will have enrolled as an incoming freshman at the University of Montana. She is taking a four year course to get her pre med requirements over and then she wants to go to medical school. Part of what happened to Maddy this summer caused her to turn to medicine as a lifetime occupation. She went to the National Youth Science Camp in the mountains out of Bartow, West Virginia. Maddy thought the camp was great. There were 120 participants and only one other from Montana, a boy from Corvallis....

  • Why do I need a Flu Vaccination?

    Robert Lucke|Aug 31, 2016

Once again Rod Hickman has become a PA at the Big Sandy Clinic. This is about the third time at least that he has moved back to Big Sandy to help out until another PA could be found. “The Mountaineer” asked if Hickman had written anything or could he write about getting a flu vaccination this fall. Luckily he said he had something and emailed it to us. We are using it this week. So, once again, Rod, you have saved our bacon. Thanks again and again for all that you do for this community! Why do I need a Flu vaccination? By Rodney Hickman PA-C Se...

September Horticulture Management Managing horticultural landscapes in September is essential to healthy production during the growing season. Below are a few recommendations for Chouteau county gardeners. • The average first frost is September 15 (Carter), September 18 (Kenilworth and Highwood), September 20 (Big Sandy), September 25 (Fort Benton) and September 28 in Geraldine. All fruit and vegetables should be harvested before temperatures drop below 40° to 50°F. • Ripen tomatoes in a paper bag along with an apple, or hang the entire plant...

  • Big Sandy High School Football Preview

    Kody Farmer|Aug 31, 2016

The 2016 Big Sandy Pioneer football team finds themselves under the direction of first-year head coach Ronnie Simpson. Simpson played collegiate basketball for the MSU-Northern Lights for two seasons but is not unfamiliar to Pioneer athletics or to the game of six-man football. Simpson is most familiar to local sports aficionados roaming the sidelines on the basketball court. Over the past few seasons he has guided the Junior High boys basketball program and last year was at the helm of the high...

  • Big Sandy High School Volleyball Preview

    Kody Farmer|Aug 31, 2016

The Big Sandy Pioneer Volleyball enters the 2016 campaign under the direction of new Head Coach Shersteen Cline. Cline should be familiar to those folks within the community and who follow Pioneer athletics. A 2008 Big Sandy High School graduate Cline first attended the University of Montana before transferring to Montana Tech her sophomore year. Cline played volleyball for the NAIA Frontier Conference Orediggers for four years prior to graduating in 2013. From there she took over as head coach...

  • Pioneers open season in Centerville Friday, Belt Saturday

    Fred Watsein|Aug 31, 2016

It has been a hot and muggy August in the gym for the Lady Pioneers. After watching the American Beach Volleyball duo of Kerri and April battle it out in the heat of Rio, inspiration was in no short supply. Big Sandy volleyball is very positive with former Pioneer standout volleyball player Shersteen Cline, coming in to coach the team and hopes and dreams are running high. Coach Cline and the Lady Pioneers headed to Centerville on Friday to kick-off the season. Saturday the team was back in the...

  • Pioneers scout Box Elder

    Fred Watsein|Aug 31, 2016

The Pioneer football team had a bye week to start the season so they took the opportunity to go watch the neighboring Box Elder Bears take on Hot Springs. The Bears finished second in all of Class C Six-Man football a season ago and Hot Springs is always a powerhouse. The boys witnessed a shellacking that could strain any players positive attitude. A score of 75-0 shocked me a bit since the last time the Bears played Hot Springs it was the Bears victory of 42-40 and sent them to the state...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Aug 31, 2016

Last week I had to wash my little dachshund, Fala. Fala needed washing badly and since he was going to be spending a lot of September at Lake McDonald it seemed like the right thing to do. Let’s get one thing straight at the outset. Getting washed is the second worst thing that a person could do to Fala. If you are interested in the first worst, it is shaving around his rear end. That sends him into a frenzy of depression until the fur has all grown back. So, giving Fala a bath is not as bad as that. When I fill up the kitchen sink with w...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Aug 31, 2016

Q: I don’t understand my cousin. Whenever I talk with her about Heaven or salvation, she just laughs and says she’s not going to worry about it, because it will all work out in the end. Why is she like this? A: Unfortunately your cousin has deliberately blinded herself to the fact that some day she will enter eternity and stand before God—and then it will be too late. The Bible warns, “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Why is she like this? She’s not alone; many people willfully refuse to t...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Aug 31, 2016

The cover of Outside magazine last month (August 2016) featured a handsome, young olympic swimmer, referring to him as “Captain America” along with a prediction that this young man would lead the American Olympic swim team to glory in Rio. To a degree, the prediction was correct. The American Olympic Swim Team won 33 medals, 16 of them gold. In fact, the American swim team won almost as many gold medals as the rest of the world’s swim teams combined. In an interesting turn of events, “Captain America’s” name is not in the news because he...
