  • Pioneer Fall Kickoff Largest one yet

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 4, 2019

The second annual Powder Puff football game was a big hit. The mom's and teachers won, making it back to back wins! The new English teacher's speed earned her the nickname "Wheels." I went to a barbeque last night, no one there was at the Powder Puff, and they said they heard I had an excellent game. Our team was very competitive." Another teacher laughed and said, "Welcome to a small town." Senior, Amanda Cline said, "It was the most fun I've ever had!" One girl said, "Let's just say we found o...

  • Personal Big Sandy Parks

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 4, 2019

I was driving past Dan and Pat Matthews yard when my granddaughter said, "Look at that very very pretty park." I told her it wasn't a park, but someone's personal yard and she said, "well some people make their own parks." Pat Matthews told me, "it is labor-intensive, but we do enjoy it. We did sod the boulevard, and we added the raised flower beds this year." It's been a struggle this year because both and Dan and Pat had surgery. The secret, besides the intensive labor, is Dan set up the...

  • TALES OF OLD BIG SANDY: The Haunted Toilets of Main Street

    Steve Sibra|Sep 4, 2019

Old-timers (and, let's face it, at age 63 I now qualify as such) will always tell you that things were "different" back in the old days – different meaning bigger, better, simpler, etc. Along those lines, I have to say that Main Street of Big Sandy, during the days of my youth (the late 1950s to mid-1970s) was a pretty interesting place, in ways that the modern version cannot quite live up to. But before I go about making my point, let me quickly acknowledge a few ways in which "modern Main Stre...

The 2019 Chouteau County 4-H and FFA livestock carcass contest took place at Pioneer Meats in Big Timber. A total of 63 Chouteau County 4-H animals were evaluated for carcass quality by Mark King (MSU Extension Sweet Grass County). The purpose of the carcass contest is to teach 4-H youth how to correctly select, feed and finish livestock based on carcass data. If carcass criteria are met, youth can be confident they are producing a high quality product that is safe, nutritious and good tasting to the consumer. Out of 36 market swine entered at...

  • A Time of Transition at BSMC

    Jessica Dooley|Sep 4, 2019

Big Sandy Medical Center was built in 1965 by the great community we all live in today. It was a fully functioning clinic and hospital at that time and babies were even born in the facility until 1985. Also, in 1985, the Long-Term Care center was added to help meet the needs of the aging community. As medicine has evolved, the facility has evolved. For the last 34 years it has operated as a full medical center. Today BSMC offers care to patients of all ages; in the Clinic, Emergency Department,...

  • Cook Stove Chronicles

    Roberta Edwards|Sep 4, 2019

A local farmwoman, who prefers to remain anonymous, recalls the time she attempted to bake in the wood burning stove. She was about 8 years old, alone in the house, “and I decided to make cupcakes.” Without a thought of stove temperature, she plopped the pans in the oven. The cupcakes began to rise, but stopped as the stove cooled, and the batter began to ooze. “The batter was running everywhere,” she said, laughing. She didn’t want her parents to know what happened, because of the sugar ration during WWII, so she quickly cleaned the oven, and...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 4, 2019

My wife and I enjoy doing Escape Rooms. These are games where you are locked in a room and have an hour to escape by solving puzzles that provide you with keys, combinations, or directions for escaping the room. We have done a dozen or so over the years in different cities around the country and love the challenge of solving problems together. Last night, we did one in Billings while on vacation. I watched as one of the gals we were doing the puzzle room with made an interesting mistake. It is one I’ve observed frequently in the past. She faced...

  • Pioneers Prevail over the Jordan Mustangs 44-28

    Serena Cator|Sep 4, 2019

The number one Jordan Mustangs came to town to face the number two Big Sandy Pioneers. The anticipation was building all week. You could see the look of determination on the faces of the Pioneers as they walked out with Pioneer flags, with the song Knock Out blaring on the brand-new speakers the Booster Club purchased. The speakers added to the enjoyment of the warm-up and the game since you could hear so much better. The Jordan Mustangs won the coin toss and deferred to the Pioneers who got...

  • Cheering for Big Sandy

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 4, 2019

For the second year in a row, Big Sandy will lead in Pioneer spirit by Big Sandy Cheerleaders. There are four cheerleaders for the football and volleyball games and eight to 10 cheerleaders for the basketballs games. It is crucial to realize cheerleaders must, by rule, cheer equally at both the football and the volleyball games. The school doesn't want them to travel to far away with the football team, so even though the volleyball games are closer or more at home, they will not be cheering...
