  • Harvest nears completion

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 18, 2024

Harvest is almost over. For the farmers in this community, this season is when they collect all their yearly income. So it's stressful. It's long hours for many days, working with the weather and equipment that breaks down. This year, we did get good rain in most areas, but the price is lower this year, so the question will be if there is enough money after selling the crops to cover the operating loan. According to Hi-line Today on 9/13/24, winter wheat was worth $5.09 a bushel, and spring...

  • Lets clean up for the Medical Center

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 18, 2024

It's that time of year. It's fall house cleaning and time to go through everything and give to the Big Sandy Medical Guild Rummage Sale. We're particularly in need of gently used clothing, toys, books, records, and glassware. There are three weeks left to clean your own home and donate. The 2024 annual rummage sale starts with donations dropped off at the Jerry Martin Memorial Hal from Monday, October 7th, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can continue to drop off items until Wednesday, October 9th,...

  • The history of Verona

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 18, 2024

If you search for the town of "Verona, MT" on Google Maps, you will discover that the small town sits 5.4 miles southwest of Big Sandy on Highway 87. Whether you blink or not as you drive by, you are likely to miss it. Years ago there was a picnic table sitting at the pull off at Verona, but that is gone now. At one time, there was a train station (of sorts), stores, two grain elevators, and other businesses. The strange little town was nestled so close to our community, but now gone without a...

    Sep 18, 2024

Statement from the Montana Hospital Association on recent political ads featuring hospitals September 10, 2024 A series of recent political campaign advertisements has raised concerns about closure of hospitals in Montana’s rural communities. These ads were not coordinated, approved or endorsed by the Montana Hospital Association nor any of the hospitals named in the ad. It is important that residents understand that every one of Montana’s rural hospitals remains open and ready to provide vital healthcare services to the communities they ser...

  • Thoughts with Zoe

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 18, 2024

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" Proverbs 15:1 What is my response to abrasive people? It's a constant struggle. I can usually keep my mouth shut, but not always! If harsh words stir me up to be harsh back, I'm no better than the person who offended me. It's a battle of self-control and understanding. Walking in the cool September weather after the nice rain, I found myself taking pictures of odd things, like always. But the picture of the thistle growing by a...

  • Hard fought football, Pioneers fall to Hot Springs 0-46

    Sep 18, 2024

Despite the Pioneers' loss against Hot Springs this past weekend, their resilience and hard work on the field were truly commendable. The final score of 0-46 doesn't fully reflect the intense battle they fought. The field conditions, muddy and slippery, posed a challenge for both teams. The Pioneers, however, showed true grit and their effort was a delight to watch. They had a great start to the game and used much of the game clock to drive the field. There was a nice pass from Quinn Rodewald...

  • The Lady Pioneers defeat the Bears in 3

    Sep 18, 2024

The Lady Pioneer Varsity team played in Box Elder this past week. The ladies won in 3 sets with scores of 25-11, 25-11, and 25-3. In the 2nd set, the Lady Bears tried to stay close to the Lady Pioneers, staying within 2 points until the Lady Pioneers pulled away by outscoring the Lady Bears 8-1 on a great run. The Lady Pioneers continue to work at improving, and it's enjoyable to watch them play as a team and fine-tune their skills. The team and individual stats are as follows: 10 team digs, wit...
