Due to the continuing drought conditions, Chouteau County producers may be eligible for one or more of FSA's disaster aid programs. • New teachers at Big Sandy Schools

    Robert Lucke|Sep 20, 2017

There is nothing more important in any community than the education of its young people. And, it is also true that there is nothing more important to any community then getting the very best teachers available in any year. This year in Big Sandy, there are four new full time teachers and Bridgette Long who is teaching one period of Spanish each school day. We wish these new teachers well and hope that they find living in Big Sandy is an adventure in good neighbors and dear hearts. Following are...

  • Big Sandy Museum High, Wide, and Handsome

    Robert Lucke|Sep 20, 2017

Well over a hundred people visited the Big Sandy Museum this summer and from the comments received around town, those people knew they had been somewhere and seen something. Our Big Sandy Museum may not be world class but it is certainly in an upper class when comparing it to other museums in Montana. Tina Rodewald is the Director of the museum. Traci Rodewald is the curator and Dale Morey is the volunteer who put in countless hours just for the love of the Museum and Big Sandy. There are new...

  • Fall Bucket List includes much foliage, good food, and Fire Season

    Robert Lucke|Sep 20, 2017

Almost everyone has a bucket list or wishes they would choose to do if they ever had a chance to do them. Years ago, some folks made their bucket lists into seasonal lists of things to do during that particular season. It is fall and we have even had a tad of fall like weather to prove it. My fall bucket list is probably similar to yours and maybe different as well. This fall bucket list is not in order of what to do first and so on. Rather it is just a series of suggestions about what fall has to offer that you might not have thought of. Fall...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Sep 20, 2017

Precautions before Grazing Alfalfa and Cover Crops • All producers should use a bloat block and expose the cattle to the bloat block in the pasture shortly before putting them onto a cover crop or alfalfa field. Seven days prior is a good rule of thumb. The bloat blocks can be placed in their salt tub. • Make sure the cattle are full before letting them out on to the alfalfa or cover crop. • Test the crops and weeds for nitrates (cereal grains, kochia, turnips and radishes). Turnips and radishes seem to have the highest nitrates of the cover...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Sep 20, 2017

Many years ago I wanted to become a teacher and had gathered enough credits at Northern Montana College to do that. Dr. Harrison Lane was my mentor for Student Teaching and he wanted me to do my Student Teaching with Lawrence Green in Big Sandy. He said the school system was simply wonderful as was Mr. Green. Lane was right on both counts! I went to Big Sandy and remember well teaching English to Big Sandy kids very interested in learning and I learned a lot from my brief stay with the Big Sandy schools. That was a wonderful school system. It...

  • @ THE JEFF REICHELT MEMORIAL LIBRARY

    Sep 20, 2017

This week Darlene has chosen” THE GLASS CASTLE” by Jeannette Walls. “THE GLASS CASTLE” is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibilit...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 20, 2017

At one point during Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign in the spring of 1862, he wound up in a position where his force was on one side of a river while it needed to be on the other side. Jackson first approached his engineers and asked them to plan and build a bridge to safely get the army to the other side. They immediately set to the task they’d been assigned. He then spoke with his wagon master, telling him that it was urgent that the wagon train get to the other side. The Wagon master immediately began gathering logs, stones, and fen...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Sep 20, 2017

Q: My friend keeps telling me that I need Jesus, but I don’t understand what he means. Why do I need Jesus? A: I’m thankful for your friend’s concern; he obviously cares about you, and he senses that something is missing in your life—something only God can supply. I pray that you’ll take your friend’s concern seriously. Why do you need Jesus? You need Him first of all because you need His salvation. You see, you aren’t here by accident; God created you, and He put you here for a reason. In fact, He loves you, and life’s greatest joy comes from...
