  • Guild + Community= Great BSMC

    Amy Sibra|Sep 21, 2016

It’s time for the annual rummage sale! Each year the Big Sandy Medical Guild sponsors a rummage sale and pie eating event with all revenue benefiting the Big Sandy Medical Center. It’s the awesome support of the community that makes it all happen. The seeds of this fabulous event were first sown in 1961, when local ladies began working as volunteers with the Havre Guild. When the Big Sandy Medical Center came into being in 1963 the efforts were redirected back to this community. Ever since, Guild members and volunteers along with the ess...

  • Emily Wheeler; Nifty History teacher at Big Sandy High School

    Robert Lucke|Sep 21, 2016

There are no classes more popular for a good share of students in high school than history classes. And yet, there can be no more frustrating classes to teach or to attend than those same history classes. It is all a matter of time. Take United States history. When teachers in the Woodrow Wilson era taught that class, they had too much to teach. Imagine trying to teach it now. Some classes get to World War II if they are lucky and unless special attention is given to modern history, it sometimes isn’t even taught. That is why teachers have t...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Sep 21, 2016

September Horticulture Questions from Chouteau County Clientele • I didn’t get my pumpkins covered when we had our first frost. Should I throw them away? According to NDSU Extension, the first light freeze usually will take out the canopy foliage and leave the fruit pretty much unharmed. Ideally, the crop should be harvested as soon as possible. If a prompt harvest isn’t possible, then hope for a week to 10 days of balmy weather with no further freezes. Harvest the pumpkins and squash at your earliest convenience. Frost blankets are highl...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Sep 21, 2016

Last week we gave you an overview of fall foliage areas that are close by where you live. Today, let’s get more specific about one area. That is the Bear Paw Mountains, a Mecca for fall foliage. First as to timing, it is everything. I have gone over Marias Pass to behold the most beautiful fall foliage ever, then come back through the next day only to find it all gone. A frost and a wind can take the foliage away in a few hours. As a rule but not hard and fast, around the first of October the foliage is thought to be prime in the Bear Paw Mount...

  • Trustees Adopt 2016-17 School Budget

    Brad Moore|Sep 21, 2016

On August 16, 2016, the Big Sandy Board of Trustees reviewed and approved the school budget for the upcoming school year. School budgets are driven by a complex funding formula with student enrollment being the biggest factor affecting budget change. The Montana Legislature has been beneficial to schools the past two sessions with inflationary adjustments in most areas of the budget, and those adjustments have helped out all schools. Similar to most businesses the school expenses rise each year. We hope to have steady to increasing enrollment...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 21, 2016

A few months ago, my daughter learned how to operate our Keurig coffee maker. It’s an easy machine to operate, so it makes sense that my 5 year old would be able to brew a perfect cup of coffee. The fantastic part of this newly acquired skill is that she loves bringing me coffee in the morning. If I stay in bed longer than she does, she wakes me up with a cup of coffee. I’ll confess, coffee in bed is one of my favorite things in life. My little girl understands that and, because she loves me, she does this thing for me. She knows it makes me...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Sep 21, 2016

Q: I haven’t heard from my two sons for several years—no Christmas cards, no Father’s Day cards, no emails, nothing. I know I was probably a lousy father, but shouldn’t they at least try to keep in touch with me? My daughter does, thankfully. A: One of life’s most heartbreaking lessons is that when we mistreat others, they often end up mistreating us. I wish it weren’t so; we ought to learn to forgive even those who deeply hurt us (as Jesus urged us to do). But it happens all the time, and it’s hard to reverse it. The Bible warns, “A man reaps...

  • Big Sandy with a tremendous win over Heart Butte 70-21

    Fred Watsein|Sep 21, 2016

The Heart Butte warriors and their league leading rusher Chasen Kipp came to Big Sandy Friday night. It was a beautiful end of summer day with a harvest moon rising over pioneer field. The Warriors came out in the first quarter giving the Pioneers a challenge and had some on the sidelines losing their cool. Weston Allderdice asserted his power on offense and defense and crushed their spirit out. By the end of the night Weston would have four rushing touchdowns and one interception touchdown....

    Fred Watsein|Sep 21, 2016

The Chinook Sugarbeeters came down from the highline on Thursday and the ladies had a good match, but fell 25-17, 25-12, 25-23. Some decent scores considering the Sugarbeeters talent and schedule. Way to make em fight to the end ladies. Jenna Leader came up with 6 digs in the match and the team had 12 blocks with Jaylyn Cline posting 5 of them, showing that the girls are making every effort to win. Friday...
