  • Big Sandy School funding has multiple layers

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 27, 2023

I’ve tried to write about school funding before. It has multiple levels and at times is difficult to completely understand. But at a recent board training, I was given a Montana School Finance Handout a 25-page document explaining school finances. I thought I would start by giving the Big Sandy K-12 Budget for FY2024. The total of all funds is $3,564,573.44, but having written that it’s important to know there are ten different fund categories. The General Fund is $2,127,853.49. Transportation is $250,000; Bus Depreciation Reserve is $64...

  • Jim Taylor Motors' Owner Discusses Life-Changing Habits

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 27, 2023

Mike Schneider, owner of Jim Taylor Motors, lost over 200 pounds in the last two years using an unusual strategy. The change was so drastic that long-time friends didn't recognize him, even after he approached and conversed with them upon returning to Florida recently. Mike attributes his success to a different approach to weight loss. "I've had more people reach out to me on this than anything I've ever done in my entire life, which is just crazy." His motivation in sharing his experience is...

Fall Management of Cheatgrass in Fallow Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), also commonly called downy brome, is a problematic weed in winter wheat and in rangeland throughout Montana. Cheatgrass typically germinates in the autumn, overwinters, and produces seed by mid-summer. The cheatgrass life cycle is similar to winter wheat which makes it a problematic weed in winter wheat fields. Cheatgrass is an abundant seed producer. Seed is only viable for one to two years in the seedbank. Cheatgrass typically germinates from late August to early October...

  • Pioneers move to 7-1 with two wins this weekend

    Sep 27, 2023

Three weeks ago, the Nebraska women's volleyball team set a world record for women's sports attendance with an outstanding 92,003 people. I absolutely loved hearing this story and seeing the clips of all the people in the stands supporting this women's volleyball team which led me to think, if you have not seen the Lady Pioneer Volleyball Team yet, you need to! These ladies are showing just how tough they are mentally and physically every week. They are overcoming adversity, and showing you...

  • Thoughts with Zoe

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 27, 2023

Giving Back I had spent the entire day from 10:00-4:00 watching football in Box Elder starting with Junior High Football. It consists of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. It’s a fun watch, but a long watch. Two hours of watching young boys learning and celebrating a game they love. The varsity Pioneer football started at 1:00. I tried to take some good photographs, but this game was intense. The kind of game that’s exhausting to watch. I made it to the Harvest Festival at 4:00. I sat down to eat—yes it was early, but I was hungry. I wande...

  • Pioneers win, but not without Bear claw marks, 36-30

    Sep 27, 2023

Even with a Big Sandy Pioneer win of 36-30, this weekend's game against the Box Elder Bears was grueling! The Big Sandy Pioneers were relentless in their effort and hard work, proving why they are still number one in the state. Without 2 key senior leaders (Jake Darlington and Cooper Taylor) on the field, the Pioneers proved how multifaceted they are and what true grit is! The Pioneers had some players step up big time, and every player left it all on the field to come away with a win against...
