  • One Incredible Weekend for the Big Sandy community

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 13, 2021

It started with a children's parade with pulled wagons that each class decorated. They even called me from the school to make sure I would see them and take a picture. The children walked from F.E. Miley School to the high school through the downtown area. They even threw candy! After they got to the football field, those who wanted to participate in the Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest. I love the Punt, Pass, and Kick contest. All those who want to be football players dream about being one. All...

  • There's been a murder at the Library!

    Erik Sietsema|Oct 13, 2021

October is upon us and it has brought a murder to the Big Sandy Library! A killer is on the loose, and the game is afoot, and by game, I mean Clue. The Library will be running a game of Clue for the community throughout the month of October. Though the full story has yet to be revealed, the cast of characters in our local game won't include Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, or any of the others from the classic game. Instead, the game will be stocked with a cast of local suspects. A...

  • A little Trivia, a bit of everything

    Erik Sietsema|Oct 13, 2021

While reading earlier this month, I came across a bit of information that prompted a question I passed around to friends and coworkers. It was interesting enough that I thought I would share it with the Mountaineer readers. There are some other bits and pieces of information added to make it interesting. Let me know if this bit of trivia is interesting and if you would like to see more of this in future issues. “Who is the wealthiest athlete of all time?” Most people guess Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. Those answers are correct if the que...

Managing horticultural landscapes and house plants in November is important for healthy production during the growing season. Below are a few recommendations for Chouteau County gardeners. • Apply protective mulches to perennial beds. • Use a humidifier to maintain humidity for houseplants. • Prune out dead limbs of woody ornamentals. • Do not fertilize or transplant anything after Columbus Day. • Continue to water landscape plantings (trees, shrubs, and perennials) until the soil freezes. • Apply winter mulch to strawberry beds as soon as the...

  • Lady Pioneers take down Knights in 4

    Oct 13, 2021

Big Sandy vs. Highwood The Highwood match went surprisingly well, considering the Pioneer ladies are a very young team and were missing a key player Amiya Griffith. But the team united and picked up their game in the second set, then pushed Highland into a fourth-round by winning their third set. Coach Brittany McKenny was pleased with her team. "I was extremely proud of my team! We didn't have Amiya due to sickness, but the girls really rose to the occasion. It's pretty thrilling to take an und...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Oct 13, 2021

Last year, while appearing on Saturday Night Live, Comedian John Mulaney told a joke that I will find funny for the rest of my life: ““It’s hard to make friends when you’re an adult. I think that’s the greatest miracle of Jesus. He has 12 best friends in his thirties, and they weren’t his wife’s best friends’ husbands.” It’s mainly funny because it hits so close to the truth. There is a ton of research pointing to the sad fact that men are increasingly isolated in our culture. The number of men who report having “No close friends” has quintupl...

The First Week in October is National 4-H week. 4-H is an organization that assists youth in developing leadership skills and community involvement. We enjoy 4-H because it gives us a good chance to get to know and serve people better in our community. 4-H also helps to prepare us for future jobs or possible scholarships. The SunShine Snippers 4-H club would not be much without the wonderful leaders who volunteer all their time and talent to help us complete our projects and learn so much thought out the year. Mary Ophus and Kristie Rutledge...

  • Pioneers run over the Knights 57-18

    Carolyn Mosier|Oct 13, 2021

Big Sandy defeated North Star this week 57-18. After a shut-out game against Box Elder last week, the Pioneers had to put in more defensive effort for this week’s win and proved to be up for the task, and the offensive proved themselves as well. While it was a slow start in the first quarter, the Pioneers scored twice then picked up their game in the second quarter. While the defense gave up two touchdowns, their offense put five more touchdowns on the board before halftime. They scored one touchdown in the third and fourth quarters, giving u...
