I sat down with superintendent Moore and talked about the new cruiser bus filling the bus barn and this is what he had to say. As we all know school funding is complex. There are numerous funds that can only be used for certain things. The general fund is the main fund of a school and that pays for staff salaries, benefits, monthly bills and curricular needs. There are separate funds to deal with cost of busing students, technology costs, retirement, and bus depreciation. The bus depreciation...
No one has ever accused Doug Giebel of not having a good imagination. He has been known to build castles in the sky for years. When the new library was just a dream, Doug had dreamed large and passed on his ideas to his community. The library ideas did not work out for Doug as he would have wished, but that did not stop him. He kept on dreaming of those castles in the sky. For the last year or more now he has been very busy putting foundations under them. As you read his story about converting...
My Neighbor in Need, founded by Dave Snuggs of Great Falls in 2012 and My Student in Need, opened in 2013, are now available in Big Sandy. My Neighbor in Need provides an anonymous resource for asking and giving help between neighbors within our community. The individual requesting help, simply completes an application and verifies some basic information with the volunteers who are running the project. Once the application is complete and the need request approved, a short story about the need is written, while keeping the person who is asking...
This is the first year that Margaret Fasteson has taught sixth grade at the Big Sandy Elementary School. Margaret and her husband hail from the Spokane area. Several years ago a friend convinced them to come to the Geraldine area where Margaret taught for two years. Bob Quinn hired Margaret's husband to be a part of his farming operation and Margaret got a job here in Big Sandy. Margaret does not run her sixth grade class like others. Sometimes she just can't as she has the largest class in the...

My mother was a good cook. She loved to bake. Her specialties in baking were cookies and pies. Her crusts were to die for and her huckleberry or juneberry pies around the holidays were wonderful to say the least. Every Sunday she would cook a roast or fry a chicken but mostly her fried chicken was cooked when we went picnicking to Glacier National Park or Beaver Creek Park. With the fried chicken she would always have deviled eggs, potato salad and her famous tuna or shrimp and pasta salad which all in her family cook to this day in honor of...
A Montana Medical Care Savings Account (MSA) allows Montanans to save money for medical expenses and long-term health care and reduce their state income taxes at the same time. Contributions of up to $3000 annually can be deposited into savings or checking accounts or certificate of deposit. Spouses must establish separate MSAs but can use the funds to pay eligible medical care expenses for the taxpayer’s eligible dependents. If the money deposited in an MSA is not used during the year it was deposited, it remains in the account for expenses i...
This week, I started a new regimen of healthy eating and exercise. Because of a minor health concern, it became clear that I needed to make changes. Exercise has been easy, largely because I enjoy it and tend to be a happier person when I am more active. My first day of eating healthy went great, at first. I ate the right foods, drank the appropriate amount of water, and followed the plan to the letter...until dinner. Then things sort of went off the rails. We went out to eat and I lacked options that fit the plan, so I indulged. Then, my kids...
Q: Maybe some women can go through an abortion and never feel guilty, but I’m not one of them. I feel terrible over what I did, and every time I drive by a school playground I’m almost consumed with grief. Will I ever get over this? A: One of abortion’s unseen (and unacknowledged) consequences is exactly what you have experienced: deep regret and guilt over what happened. Tragically, however, sometimes a far different consequence takes place: spiritual and emotional insensitivity to what happened. This, I fear, is the reaction of far too many...

The Pioneers came up against one of the top teams in the state on Friday. If not for the first quarter we could have had them. The Geraldine - Highwood Rivals came out rockin' and had three scores by the end of the first quarter. Any other team would have rolled over, but not our Pioneers. The boys came out in the second quarter and Laurence Allderdice punched one in the end zone. Then one minute later we got the ball back and Brock Proulx passed to Laurence Allderdice for the touchdown and a...
