  • Voting in 2020

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 28, 2020

The 2020 Primary Elections had higher than normal turnout. Statewide there are 696, 262 Registered Voters; of that 382,072 voted making it a 54.87% turnout. Chouteau County has 3,490 registered voters; 2,244 voted for a 64% turnout. Voting is a privilege. I have a friend that lives in Australia. She just recently reminded me that voting is mandatory in Australia. If you don’t vote you receive a “hefty” fine. About 8-10% just scribble on the ballot, but it stills means that 90-92% of the voters make the decisions of the direction of the count...

  • Demrece Keller 17 years teaching in Big Sandy

    Erik Sietsema|Oct 28, 2020

"I thank God daily for having a job like this. It's wonderful. To be able to work with inquisitive minds is truly a blessing," was the reply I got from Demrece Keller when I asked how she liked teaching at F.E. Miley Elementary School. "Over the past 17 years, I have taught with some wonderful people. I have learned a lot, but my most favorite thing about teaching is the students... I refer to them as my kids sometimes. They are very near and dear to my heart. To me that's my most favorite part...

  • Jessica Ophus writes a book "Bonus Love"

    Erik Sietsema|Oct 28, 2020

"...Having someone new in your life does not mean that there is less love, but in fact, there is more. Having a Bonus Mom means having Bonus Love." This is one of the main messages in Bonus Love: A Children's Book for Blended Families by local author Jessica Ophus. Jessica recently came to Montana as a travel nurse. While in the area, she met Big Sandy's own Mason Ophus. The pair became friends, eventually started dating, and recently got married. As the couple prepared for their wedding day,...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Oct 28, 2020

Diagnosing injury to plants from herbicides can be difficult. A new guide (EB0232) from Montana State University is intended to aid in assessing and identifying potential non-target herbicide injury. Knowing when and what was applied is vital for diagnosing herbicide injury. In addition, knowing weather conditions, soil type and soil pH, and other environmental factors that affect herbicide performance can be helpful. This guide first describes background information necessary to understand herbicide injury, then symptoms of herbicide injury...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Oct 28, 2020

“Worry is like a rocking chair. It’ll keep you busy, but you won’t get anywhere doing it.” I first heard this line from a 16-year old kid in a rehab program I was working with. I’ve repeated it hundreds of times because a great deal of the stress and anxiety we experience in life is related to things we have very little actual control over. In the current season of our lives, constant anxiety is easy to spot. Folks are worried about the pandemic, the election, instability in our cities, economic dangers, and a million other things. It seems...

  • Getting by

    Janell Barber|Oct 28, 2020

November is observed as American Diabetes Month. This is an opportunity to share information about diabetes, making people aware of what it is and why it is important to manage diabetes when diagnosed or even prevent it.34. What is diabetes? Simply put, it is a condition that causes the levels of glucose (blood sugar) in your blood to get too high. Over time, your organs cannot function properly due to the high levels of glucose. It just cannot keep up with the demand and then you begin to experience health problems. If diabetes is not...

  • Big Sandy School Board meeting

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 28, 2020

During public comment, the problem with car congestion by school pickup areas was brought forward and discussed. Big Sandy Booster club was present and talked to the school board members about the Pioneer logo the booster club uses. There is no trademark or copyright connected with it. They also discussed replacing the padding behind the basketball hoops in the main gym. The design will be done at Universal Athletics. Currently, the Booster Club is thinking about purchasing only one wall; however, there is a lot to do before a design is agreed...

  • City Council Discuss but waits to take action

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 28, 2020

The City Council met in the City Hall’s big room, with appropriate spacing, even though some still attended the meeting by Zoom, including this reporter. There were three city employees and two guests present. The meeting started as usual with the pledge of alliance and the reading of the minutes. No Sherriff’s deputy was in attendance. KLJ Engineers presented the Water Certification Survey with the request to purchase ½ an acre for building a building for the new water system. The new building will be for a meter and treatment. They have sugg...

  • Letter to the Editor- Peaceful Protest

    Oct 28, 2020

Our “Trump 2020 sign was taken from our front lawn last week. We have since learned several others have had their signs taken as well as the “Trump Train” by the highway being vandalized. These are not acts owe expect to happen in Big Sandy. To me these actions represent the lawlessness the Democratic Party has tolerated and even supported. Such as many of Biden’s and Harris’ campaign staff contributing to funds to provide bail for so called peaceful protesters who are arrested. Also we see many Democrat prosecutors not file charges against t...

  • Letter to the Editor - Living with Covid-19

    Oct 28, 2020

Dear Big Sandy Community: I am writing this out of an inherent obligation to be transparent with the Big Sandy community. By the time this letter is published, I will be fully recovered and back to work after testing positive for COVID-19. This is a personal health issue I am choosing to share because it is the right thing to do. First and foremost, according to the timeframe of my symptoms, there was no exposure to residents, patients, or other BSMC staff. I was not in contact with anyone, besides my immediate family, close enough or long...

  • Letter to the Editor - Appreciation

    Oct 28, 2020

Editor’s Note: Pam Gasvoda expressed to me their deep appreciation for Big Sandy for the care and support they have received; however, she didn’t want to have to keep repeating the following information over and over. In January 1998, Arnie Gasvoda had surgery because he had prostate cancer. In January 1999, he had six weeks of radiation treatments recommended by his urologist because his PSA kept going up. Now 20 years later, he has radiation cystitis due to the radiation way back then. He has a very weak, like hamburger, bladder. This sta...

  • Pioneers corral Longhorns 57-6 in playoff opener

    Sean Janssen|Oct 28, 2020

It's not quite the bustling holiday season but Big Sandy is already toiling away at vanquishing the Ghosts of Postseasons Past. The first specter appeared against a backdrop of powdery white in the form of the 2018 6-Man football champs and last year's runner-up, the Wibaux Longhorns. The Longhorns proved just a phantom of their former selves, however, and left Big Sandy with a 57-6 defeat to conclude an uncharacteristic 2-4 season. It's not that they didn't know what was coming at them. They ju...

  • Hawks prey on wounded Pioneers in VB reg. Season finale

    Sean Janssen|Oct 28, 2020

The Pioneer volleyball lineup that took the court a week prior to Saturday's regular season finale at home didn't look much like the one from a week prior. It probably won't look much like the one they put out to open the District 7C tournament Thursday at their home gym either. Big Sandy pieced together a squad without three crucial players, leading hitter Amiya Griffith, versatile Tavie Wortman and Wortman's anticipated substitute, Malaysia Baumann, all out due to injuries or quarantining....
