  • Trunk or Treat is back this year! Children of the Corn-Dog Truck

    Kalee Rose|Oct 30, 2019

Every Halloween for the past four years, Patti Pegar has used her food truck to give out corn dogs to the community. It has become a tradition between her and her husband, Don Pegar. The first year in 2014, they gave out hot dogs, and every year after, it’s been corn dogs. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community. “Giving something to kids and parents who may live out of town, making it easier to enjoy the night of spooky festivities and not have to worry about dinner,” Patti said. They spend as much on the corn dogs...

    Kalee Rose|Oct 30, 2019

St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church held its annual Harvest Dinner this Sunday, October 27th. With fantastic food and lots of people, it sure is quite the event. This dinner has been going on for 50+ years, and it’s a great way to get the community together for the holiday season. This dinner was held from 11 am to 2 pm for everyone to come and fellowship with others. They served classic turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy, some delicious salads, and homemade desserts. The food was incredible and made me feel like Thanksgiving is just around t...

  • Big Sandy High Schools "Don't Be Tardy!" policy explored

    Amiya Griffith and Tavie Wortman|Oct 30, 2019

The "new and improved" tardy policy has taken some getting used toAt Big Sandy High School. It was believed that 2019 was a year of change, and the Tardy Policy seems to be the most significant among students. However, the staff of BSHS has informed students that the tardy policy is not new or improved. So why have they never heard of it before? According to Melanie Schwarzbach, Athletic Director and 7-12 Science teacher, it's an easy answer. "The policy has been in place, and we simply decided...

  • TALES OF OLD BIG SANDY: Cliff Gullickson Was A Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

    Steve Sibra|Oct 30, 2019

Welcome to another chapter in my recounting of the tales of Old Big Sandy (which means "old" by the standards of my lifetime, mostly the 1960s and early 1970s). This column is not meant to be a telling of Cliff Gullickson's life story; it is instead a summation of my observations about the man as I knew him during the time that we were both part of Big Sandy. People might not have thought about it at the time, but a small community is made up of people who play varying roles in the lives of...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Oct 30, 2019

The MSU Extension non-soil agricultural fumigation manual for private applicators (EB0229) is available at the Chouteau County Extension office. Many fumigants are classified among the most toxic pesticides currently available for use. Accidents are rare but when they do occur, they can result in the fatality of applicators and bystanders. The disparity between fumigants and other pesticides is significant, including personal protective equipment, the use of monitoring devices, determining dosage, etc. The manual was created as an aid in...

    Jessica Dooley|Oct 30, 2019

We are batty for Halloween here at the Medical Center! This is such a fun event for our staff and our residents. We encourage everyone to join us in the festivities. It all started in early October when the staff began planning their Halloween costumes. It has become quite an inter-department competition over the last few years. This will be the third-annual costume contest within the facility, and everyone is out to get the nursing staff! Each department plans their costumes then on Halloween...

  • Pearson Pumpkin Patch

    Gay Pearson|Oct 30, 2019

Rain and mud made it questionable whether Big Sandy's F. E. Miley School would be able to come to Pearson's Pumpkin Patch on the scheduled date. With shortages of bus drivers, it was not looking good for any date changes. Thankfully they had just enough wind with a little sun, the road dried and the buses made the journey. Every student was able to pick their favorite pumpkin, find their way through the hay maze, have a few treats and take part in the fun duck races. The wheat pit was also a...

  • Pioneers Strutz past Power-Dutton-Brady

    Thomas Dilworth|Oct 30, 2019

Big Sandy 35, Power-Dutton-Brady 0 It was a bitterly cold day this past Saturday up in Dutton, Montana, as the Pioneers shut out Power-Dutton-Brady 35 – 0 to capture the 6-man North Title and move one step closer to competing for the State 6man Championship. It took the Pioneers a full quarter of football to get warmed up and gain some traction, but that will happen when you’re playing in 3 inches of freshly fallen snow. It seemed as if the “Gator” clearing the snow off the field during timeouts and in-between quarters was clearing a path fo...

  • The Mystery of the Three Missing Girls

    Faith Cator|Oct 30, 2019

Hello class. As you know, its Halloween. I’m Jenna, and my book report is about the Mystery of the Three Missing Girls. So, it all started about 40 years ago on this day. There was a girl named Sarah, another girl named Maddie and another girl named Ginger. Jenna clears her throat and starts telling her story, “Maddie,” Sara asked. “Yes,” Maddie replied. “Do you like Halloween?’ “Ahhh, I guess, Maddie said. “What about you, Ginger?” “No, not really, said Ginger, “Hey Sarah, what do you like about Halloween?” “Ah, I don’t really…” BOOM “What w...

  • From the Editor of the Moutnaineer~ Lorrie Merrill Over the top with Advertisements

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 30, 2019

It won’t be the first time I didn’t know what to do. A paper requires a lot of advertisements to publish. I knew when I bought the Big Sandy paper that this would be a challenge for me. That’s not saying writing isn’t it, but I had been writing, learning, as I went for over almost two years when I bought the paper. I knew nothing about how to sell ads. I also knew that Big Sandy didn’t even have enough businesses to place ads to pay for the process of printing, so I had to find and sell the paper to prospective businesses. It takes about 43% to...
