    Zoe Merrill|Nov 6, 2019

I wanted to visit with someone from First Bank about the bank coming to Big Sandy and had the opportunity to talk to Dean Comes, President, Dona Harrison, Manager of Deposit Operations, and Megan Bartel Loan Operations. I first asked, who are you? First Bank became a division of Glacier Bank in 2006. Glacier Bank operates in over 100 communities across Montana, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. • A Vet Remembers

    Serena Cator|Nov 6, 2019

It was almost the end of my 12-hour shift when the call came in. As soon as you heard the voices on the radio, you knew something was different, and something was terribly wrong. I was the S2 (military intelligence) battle captain in our TOC (tactical operating center). I was in charge of all things that involved military intelligence for our current operations. So, the Battle Major hollered for me to send our UAV's (unmanned Ariel vehicles) to where our guys were being attacked. While this was...

  • Taken from the May 24, 1917 Mountianeer Northern Montana State Bank to Have New Home

    Nov 6, 2019

The Northern Montana State Bank has decided to erect a new home this summer, and work will commence as soon as possible on the new building. The new structure will stand on the same site as the bank now occupies, and the old building will be removed to the back of the lot and the bank will continue to occupy it until they move into the new structure. The new building will be in every way a fitting home for the ban, and when completed will be one of the finest in the state in a town of this size. The exterior on the two street sides will be...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Nov 6, 2019

Sampling of hay is essential to livestock management. Hay sampling is best accomplished with a hollow core probe consisting of a stainless-steel tube and a sharp cutting end. The Chouteau County Extension office has a hay probe available for check out. One core should be sampled from at least 20 bales from a lot of hay. A lot of hay is defined as hay harvested from a field of uniform maturity within two days. A lot should not exceed 200 tons. Poor sampling techniques and an inadequate number of subsamples (less than 20) are the largest sources...

  • Patching Cracks

    Nov 6, 2019

Khrushchev, the former leader of the Soviet Union, used to tell a story about a factory guard who was posted at a lumber mill in Leningrad to guard against employee theft. One day, a worker came walking out of the factory with a wheelbarrow containing a sack. The guard asked the worker what was in the sack, assuming that it was something the worker was stealing. The factory worker explained that it was a bag of sawdust, which he had permission to take home. The unconvinced guard searched the bag and found it to contain nothing but sawdust. Day...

  • Region 6 Havre Check Station Results after Opening Weekend of General Hunting Season

    Nov 6, 2019

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Havre hunter check station was active over the weekend (Oct. 26-27) of general deer and elk opener, with the number of hunters checked a little below average. This was the third weekend that the check station has been open, as the station began collecting data Oct. 12-13, corresponding with the opening weekend of pheasant and general antelope. “Hunter numbers may have been down slightly this weekend due to the cool, windy weather, and because of the youth deer hunt being a week earlier,” said Havre-area biolo...

  • Cinderella Pioneers ride upsets to divisional spot

    Sean Janssen|Nov 6, 2019

In a remarkably effective team-bonding exercise, the Big Sandy Lady Pioneers all went as Cinderella for their Halloween party this year. What a party it turned out to be, the 6C East district volleyball tournament hosted by Chinook High School on Halloween night. While the Pioneer netters did not literally don ball gowns and glass slippers for the event, they busted the October/November bracket just like the legends of March Madness. With wins against foes Chester-Joplin-Inverness and Box Elder...

  • Pioneers finish off Fusion 51-16, host Roy/Winifred in quarters

    Sean Janssen|Nov 6, 2019

The conventional wisdom holds that to knock Big Sandy off its undisputed No. 1 perch in 6-man football, an opponent just needs to stop the offensive bombardment of Kade Strutz rushes. For the second consecutive week, a playoff team threw literally everything they had at doing just that and found it easier said than done. Richey-Lambert (7-3) succeeded no more in their efforts than did Power-Dutton-Brady a week earlier in the conference title game. Strutz carried 30 times for 265 yards and four...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Nov 6, 2019

Food allergies, intolerances, sensitivities…..is there a difference? These terms are often confused to mean the same thing. It comes down to the immune system versus digestive system. Food allergies are a reaction by the immune system and can be as severe as life threatening. Food intolerances and sensitivities take place in the digestive system and are typically accompanied with discomfort which may cause interruptions in daily life making them very annoying and frustrating but also may lead to medical issues. With food allergies, the i...
