  • Reinholt E. Bitz tells his Story

    Reinholt Bitz|Nov 11, 2015

On Pearl Harbor Day, I was only 19 years of age. I had to register for the draft when I was 20 years old. I went out to Bremerton, Washington and worked in the Navy yards for about 7 or 8 months. It was good experience and soon made a believer out of me that I didn't want anything to do with the Navy. We had to work on some of the battleships that survived Pearl Harbor and also had some destroyers and other ships that came in from the Aleutian Islands. There were still bodies trapped in the...

  • Veterans honored every day

    Robert Lucke|Nov 11, 2015

We try to devote the front page of “The Mountaineer” to veterans on Veterans Day and on Memorial Day. Of course we, like you, know that we really honor veterans every day, when we see them and when we do not. If infirm we carry them like they carried us in battles all over the world. My father had a veteran friend who came back from World War II with what was then called Shell Shock. The friend was very quiet and did not use good sense about how to live life in Montana or anywhere else. The veteran could not hold a job although before the war...

  • Cropping questions and answers from the Chouteau County Extension Office

    Tyler Lane|Nov 11, 2015

Is sorghum a practical crop to raise in Chouteau County? Sorghum production may be practical in the warmer regions of Chouteau County. The Central agriculture research center at Moccasin is too cool to produce sorghum. The maximum yield at Moccasin was 500 pounds per acre on dryland fallow. Northern Agricultural research center near Havre has more heat units, and has produced 2000 to 4000 pounds per acre on dryland fallow. One of the major concerns with sorghum is frost during the growing season. Sorghum between Fort Assiniboine and Laredo...

  • @ THE LIBRARY

    Robert Lucke|Nov 11, 2015

Vic’s Pics Vicki can sure pick good books. Not only is this one by James Patterson but it is a murder mystery and it comes with a multimillion dollar house in the Hamptons to make us even more scared. “THE MURDER HOUSE” is Number 7 Ocean Drive and is a gorgeous multimillion dollar beachfront estate in the Hamptons where money and privilege know no bounds. But it’s beautiful gothic exterior hides a horrific past: it was the scene of a series of depraved killings that have never been solved. Neglected, empty and rumored to be cursed, it is know...
