  • A Seussified Christmas Carol opens November 22

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 13, 2019

This years’ play, what a delightful phrase to say, will be presented on November 22 and 23 at 7:00 pm both nights. Big Sandy has the wonderful opportunity to enjoy a Christmas tradition in the watching of a Christmas Carol initially written by Charles Dickens in 1843. A Christmas Carol is a story about Ebenezer Scrooge, an older grabby man who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and three spirits of Christmas. The ghost of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas yet to come. Scrooge becomes a different ...

  • Big Sandy's CSI Stroll "Merry Grinchmas"; Sleigh Bells Ring

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 13, 2019

The Grinch's sleigh was a simple wooden snow sleigh. The only thing that made it unique was the size of the load it carried. Sleighs have always been a part of the Christmas décor. This year the sled was chosen as the one item crafters in the area could decorate and auction off to help raise funds for next year's Christmas Stroll. There are ten sleighs, some made from wood, from metal, and woven material. Every sled has been picked up and is being decorated waiting for the big Christmas Bazaar...

  • Small Town • Big World

    Judy Yirsa|Nov 13, 2019

As a young child, I developed a love for travel from road trips with my family. The destination was always predictable. We would either visit family in San Diego or my family in Baja California, Mexico. Being as I grew up in Central California in the predominantly agricultural town of Bakersfield, the final destinations were not distant, but were vastly different from home! San Diego was my favorite in that there were many beaches to walk and play in, as well as delicious restaurants, outlet malls, and it always seemed to have the most ideal...

  • Pioneer Pride Rotary Made

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 13, 2019

Rotary originally bought the Pioneer banners for Homecoming but decided to put them up for the football and volleyball playoffs. They will stay up until the playoffs are over-two more weeks. They started to put up the Christmas decorations at the same time as the Pioneer pride banners, but the Christmas decorations didn't fit on the same pole with the Pioneer Pride. So, this year, they are going to put the Christmas decorations up after the football playoffs are over. That means there will be...

  • Principal Wolery's Positive Pioneer Praises

    Heather Wolery|Nov 13, 2019

This week my positive praise is for our TEACHERS! We have 19 certified teachers in our K-12 district, 7 teachers in the elementary and 12 in the high school, six of those teachers travel between both buildings. Together they have more than 250 years of experience! They each hold a 4 year degree. Among them they have 14 minor degrees or concentrations and 6 masters. They have spent 24,960 minutes with your children so far this year, that number being based on their contracted hours. Although I would estimate that they have put in an extra...

  • Some of My Favorite Things

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 13, 2019

I needed to prepare for Thanksgiving for a holiday, which allows us to express our gratitude. Although when asked what we are most thankful for, we always say something like, my family, my health, my home, my job. Ok, those are, of course, what we are all most thankful for, but gratitude should be more profound than that. It should penetrate our lives by the hour. One of the greatest truths I have discovered is you find what you are looking for. I started keeping a gratitude journal; I called...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Nov 13, 2019

Mindful Eating How many times have you done something and cannot remember what happened or what was said? Have you even found that you cannot remember what you had to eat a few hours ago? Our minds wander due to deadlines, upcoming events and other pressures, which can lead to us doing things without paying attention. This even happens with eating. More and more research has found practicing mindfulness while eating to have a positive psychological well-being for individuals and their eating behaviors. Mindful eating is being aware of your...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 13, 2019

In ancient Israel, every Jewish boy would learn the Torah in school. Specifically, they would memorize the Jewish religious writings starting at an early age until the rabbi teaching them decided they had reached their potential as students. At that time, they were sent off to work in whatever field their family had always worked in. Some students would be sent away early to work, while others would progress to the point that they were accepted as a disciple to a rabbi. This was sort of like earning your doctorate. Anyone who studied under a...

  • Hunter Harvest Near Average for Elk, Whitetail Deer Despite Unsettled Weather

    Nov 13, 2019

Despite weather that’s windy and warm one day, then cold and snowy the next, hunters on the Rocky Mountain Front west of Augusta are taking home elk and white-tailed deer at numbers near or above long-term averages, a state wildlife biologist said. “Elk harvest remains at seven percent below the 10-year average” said Brent Lonner, Fish, Wildlife and Parks wildlife biologist. “But the white-tailed deer harvest is 17 percent above the 10-year average.” Mule deer numbers, however, are lagging behind. “The mule deer harvest is 21 percent bel...

  • No. 1 Pioneers rough up Outlaws 60-6, on to No. 2 Jordan

    Sean Janssen|Nov 13, 2019

Big Sandy football got over a major hump Saturday in its state quarterfinal win, 60-6 at home against Roy/Winifred. It is the third consecutive season the Pioneers (10-0) reached the second round of the 6-man football tournament and unlike the last two seasons, these Pioneers are moving beyond it. Star running back Kade Strutz averaging first-down yardage on each carry, picking up 150 yards and five touchdowns on his 10 rushing attempts, helped Big Sandy to advance. So did Clint Darlington's...

  • Lady Pioneers finish season at Divisionals

    Sean Janssen|Nov 13, 2019

The Big Sandy Lady Pioneers would not make the same splash at the divisional tournament in Cascade that they did at districts in Chinook. The magic that carried them to the second level of the postseason ran out Thursday as the Pioneer volleyball squad lost its two matches at divisionals to Power and all-too-familiar 6C East foe North Star. Power advanced past Big Sandy 25-22, 25-26, 22-25, 25-13. Senior Seanna Demontiney led the Pioneers with seven kills and junior Alicia Bjornestad added...

  • River Ramblings North

    Gay Pearson|Nov 13, 2019

There are many homesteads here at Pearson Ranch along the beautiful picturesque Missouri River. The Johnson's, Bakers, Coopers, among many other names, lost in the sands of time. There are no longer existing homesteads, just humps of dirt where sod shanties were or holes that were root cellars or storage for steamboats passing through. A few covered cisterns still exist in school sections where country schools stood. The Kabo school was on our ranch, my brother Jack and I were the last...
