  • Veteran's Day Honored by The Big Sandy Students

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 20, 2019

TJ Bond music teacher at the Big Sandy schools presented to our community an excellent program to honor the vets in our community. The grade school children were supposed to wear red, white, and blue. It was too cold to wear summer's red and white and blue, but they did anyway. As the Veterans came into the high school auditorium, they were encouraged to go down to the front to be honored, but no one wanted too. I guess they deserved the right to sit where they wanted. Every student of both...

  • Big Sandy's CSI Stroll "Merry Grinchmas"; Parade of LIghts & Costume Contest

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 20, 2019

Let’s start with what’s new this year. The small children can write their letters to Santa, take them to the Library, and send them via special mailbox that Santa set up. They will place the letter inside the mailbox, close the lid and raise the flag, and just like that, their letters will magically be sent to Santa. Also new this year is the Christmas Costume Contest. Costumes must be relatable to Christmas or be recognized as a character from a Christmas movie to be considered for the Prize. The adult’s Grand Prize is sponsored by Agri-Prairi...

Congratulations to the choir of Big Sandy for being chosen to represent the small towns in Montana on PBS, national television. What a fantastic group of students and teachers we have! Amanda Robertson said, “The students in Big Sandy have been great to work with, and I am so excited that the choir has the opportunity to perform and record for PBS. I’m not sure what the nomination process was or who nominated the choir, but the students should be very proud to represent our town of Big Sandy and our state of Montana. There’s a lot of talen...

  • "Some of my favorite things."

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 20, 2019

I liked the idea of discussing Thanksgiving by acknowledging what simple pleasures we cherish. Like, “Having a job.” I visited five residents to find what their favorite things were. “Spending time with grandkids, my kids, and having family close. When my sister moved away, you realize how important it is to spend quality time with them. We need to treasure the people we love.” “Grandkids. They can get away with anything at my house.” “I’m really thankful for my friends since I have had my health issues.” “Glass of wine.” “Having a slow cup of...

Two weeks remain in the general hunting season, which closes on Sunday, Dec. 1. The region’s three FWP wildlife check stations saw 194 elk, 68 mule deer, and 309 white-tailed deer compared to 184 elk, 54 mule deer and 232 whitetails at this point in the 2018 season. • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 20, 2019

The treadmill was originally invented as a torture device for prisoners. Prisoners were chained in place on a cycling belt that simply continued to move. The prisoners were forced to run or walk in place for hours at a time as a form of torture. It’s a pretty ingenious torture device, if you think about it. You work all day, exhausting yourself, but never accomplish anything for your efforts. After sweating and straining all day, you are still standing in the same place you were when you started. I recently read a book by a philosophy p...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Nov 20, 2019

It is the time of the year where many holidays and events will be celebrated with gatherings of family, friends and food. With all the hecticness, do not forget about keeping your food safe. The last thing you want is to have friends and family sick, unable to enjoy the festivities. Reminders for preparing and keeping food safe: • Clean hands – wash with warm water and soap for 20 seconds before and after handling any food. This is important because viruses are not killed by heating food. The key to not spreading viruses is by washing your han...

  • Pioneers' path to state title dead-ends in Jordan rout

    Sean Janssen|Nov 20, 2019

The 6-man football state tournament could still have a Hollywood ending this weekend. It just won't feature the Big Sandy Pioneers. The Pioneers' final scene in this year's production faded to black (and orange) on a windswept and muddy field Saturday in the heart of Garfield County. The stars of the afternoon matinee were the host and East Division champion Jordan Mustangs (11-1) from the opening curtain to the final credits in a 55-25 win. "They played great defense. They had a great plan,...

  • River Ramblings North

    Beverly Terry|Nov 20, 2019

As I was processing the last of the ripe tomatoes that I picked green before the first snowstorm of the season, I got thinking about my mom, how she kept ten people fed, clean, and healthy. Amazing how she canned hundreds of quarts of vegetables and meats for the year. I was having trouble with one sick little boy, and getting anything done. The ferry was my first priority after taking care of my grandson. Then the chickens because I have food and water set-up so they can go for days without...
