    Robert Lucke|Nov 29, 2017

In this land of plenty called the Golden Triangle there is nothing worse than going to bed with an empty belly and yet that happens. However, it does not happen as much as it used to with the advent of the Big Sandy Food Bank which used to be run out of the Methodist Church basement and now is run at the Big Sandy Church of God. According to Pastor Eric Sietsema, there are about fifteen families that have real needs for food and that translates into around 70 people in our community that would not make it through the month without help from...

  • Strong Winds are a thing of the Plains in Montana

    Robert Lucke|Nov 29, 2017

Last week on Thanksgiving day it was in the sixties in many parts of Montana. Strange to say the least because for some time now it has been cold with even snow on the ground when Thanksgiving rolls around. It is the wind, those wonderful Chinook winds that cause the temperatures to go up. Just before Thanksgiving early one morning I was awake and heard the winds start up and noticed that the house was getting very warm. I saw that around 5am the temperature outside was almost 50 and the winds had died down. I was sad because I had hoped to...

Using Straw in Cattle Rations- Frequently asked Questions How much straw can I put in my cow winter ration? It is important to know that straw is a low energy, and low protein feed. It is not as digestible as hay or green feed. Generally, a cow can consume 1.25% of her body weight in straw dry matter (DM). Therefore, a 1400 lb cow could consume 17.5 lbs on a DM basis, or 19.9 lbs on an ‘as-fed’ basis if the straw was 90% DM (17.5/0.9 = 19.9 lbs, this calculation is to adjust for the moisture content of the straw). Near the end of ges...

Soon with funding we’ll be able to install a heating system in the former S&J grocery store so we can finish renovations and operate year round. Robert Lucke|Nov 29, 2017

I think I write this column every year around Christmas time but it means a lot to me so here I go again. I love the Christmas lights that are up all over this time of year. Just look at Big Sandy. Thanks to the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce and many joyous volunteers, the town just pops at Christmas and is lovely and gives even more meaning to the birth of the Christ Child and all that has meant for so many generations. I think I can remember the first Christmas lights to be strung in Havre. I think they were on the big brick Clack...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Nov 29, 2017

Q: Every year I tell myself that I’m not going to get caught up in the Christmas shopping crush—but every year I hit the stores as soon as they open the day after Thanksgiving. I’ll probably do the same this year. I know this isn’t a spiritual question, but why can’t I be more self-controlled? A: Although it may not strike you as such, in reality this is a spiritual question—because it deals with everything from the way we use our money, to what we think is really important in life. Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 29, 2017

In the 5th Century, an Egyptian named Arenius set out to live a holy life by abandoning the community he lived in and living in the desert as a monk. After several years of living in the wilderness, he visited the city of Alexandria, where he spent time wandering through the markets and bazaars. A Christian in Alexandria asked him why he spent so much time wandering through the shops if he had renounced possessions and worldly comforts. He responded that he was filled with joy at the sight of so many things that he didn’t need. Arenius had l...
