  • Another Stroll in the books; Big Sandy's Heart Always Beats

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 11, 2019

Thanks to the Big Sandy CSI organization for another Christmas celebration. It started early. Santa waited patiently for his first visit at the Mint. When I got there, the place was packed. After I took a picture and I went down to the Bear Paw Coffee Shop and ordered a coffee. A small child came in, and I asked if they wanted to see Santa, they asked where and I told them at the Mint. They said, "The bar?" Yes, it has Big Sandy flair! Vendors started carrying their wares shortly after 8:00, at...

  • F.E. Miley sings the sounds of Christmas

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 11, 2019

For some, the FE Miley School program has been six years in the making. For others, it was their first one. For me, it is always my favorite concert. It could be that I love Christmas, or it could be I love children playing instruments they are still learning on. I also love how the little girls dress up and feel so pretty. I love watching the littlest coming out on to the stage, scared and shy, looking for their mom or dad, or anybody they know. See their faces light up when they find them, and...

  • Erin Taylor, Violinist for The Great Falls Youth Orchestra

    Kalee Rose|Dec 11, 2019

I want to start by congratulating Erin Taylor on becoming a violinist for the Great Falls Youth Orchestra. Erin is a senior at Big Sandy Highschool, where she is involved in sports, music, and the FFA. She grew up with three brothers, one younger and two older. They resided in Dillon, where Erin had the opportunity to join the Junior Fiddlers, a group of young musicians that plays old tunes on old fiddles. The Junior Fiddlers is a great chance to get together with other musicians who have the...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Dec 11, 2019

PASSWORDS Using strong passwords, not using the same password for everything and changing passwords often are some of the most important ways to keep your online accounts from being hacked. Most of these points you have heard before but check them out to see if there are any new ones or need a reminder. - Create passwords with at least 8 characters (at least 1 number, 1 letter and 1 special character) which are easy to remember but not easy to guess. A phrase or sentence is a good way to help remember it. The more characters, the more secure....

  • River Ramblings North

    Beverly Terry|Dec 11, 2019

Well, Hunting season is over, and the hills and roads have become settled once again. I can walk outside to watch the beautiful rising sun and hear the geese getting ready for their flight up to the fields for the day. I can listen to a car driving on the roads above the valley; I can hear this for miles. You can even tell if it is coming or going, with the end of hunting peace and quiet is reinstated. As I sit out drinking coffee greeting the morning, these sounds always give me comfort and joy...

  • Pioneer boys high on experience, expectations

    Sean Janssen|Dec 11, 2019

This is the year to put it all together. When third-year coach Thomas Dilworth arrived at Big Sandy, he could look ahead to this year and see how things would be shaping up for the Pioneer varsity boys. There are six seniors on the squad. “Few teams bring back as much experience as we have,” Dilworth said. He speaks about his team with confidence and something intangible, akin to the excitement children display on Christmas morning just before the lid comes off the biggest box. “We hope to create a lot of mismatch problems … I think we have si...

    Sean Janssen|Dec 11, 2019

New Year’s Day is still a few weeks away but the Big Sandy Lady Pioneers have already turned the page and are looking to a fresh start. First-year head coach Pete Jerrel enters with some familiarity with many of his players, having coached them as junior high ballers. Jerrel has also previously been an assistant coach for the varsity boys. “There’s some good athletes on the team … a whole pile of them that can get up and down the floor,” he said. The Pioneers will need to make the most of their athleticism to compete in a strong 9C district....

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Dec 11, 2019

Before coming to Big Sandy, I worked with kids in a mental health facility. Most of the kids were pretty ordinary but had abusive or difficult upbringings. The result of their terrible life experiences was often a great deal of anger and disfunction. It was a difficult job because we worked with kids lived at the facility. Their parents weren’t there to care for them, so we had to fill in the best we could. The hardest part of the job was that we had to deal with clients at their worst. It became very easy to shift our mindset from one where w...
