It is that time of year when music rules supreme. The time of year when we usually know every song being played. It brings up memories and smiles. It lifts us, and despite ourselves, we find ourselves smiling. Ok, there is occasionally a song that is played so much we start crumbling about "that" same song. There is music about the Savior being born. Music about family. Music about Santa. My favorite concerts are this time of year. I love listening to grade school children sing. I love watching...
It was great to have Jessie Jaramillo, Big Sandy's Art teacher, display some of the work of the Big Sandy students in the Mountaineer during the Big Sandy Stroll. I was also happy with the number of people who stopped to talk to her and see the students' work because I believe art is essential. She had written up explanations of the work the students had done. Jessie Jaramillo said, "In simple terms, the elements of art are parts that make up the whole. These are often described as methods or...
The theme for the Christmas Parade at this year's stroll was "A Montana Christmas." Thinking about our town and the holidays got me wondering what the town did for Christmas in the earliest years of its existence. Big Sandy has a wonderful collection of Christmas traditions and a fascinating history that stretches back more than a century. A little searching into The Mountaineer archives quickly revealed the ghosts of Christmas traditions past. The most interesting thing about The Mountaineer's...

Many times over the last couple of decades, I have encountered a strange argument about Christian Christmas observances. The argument is that Christians adopted pagan customs for their own religious observations. One example that is frequently cited is the Christmas tree. Folks will say that Christmas trees were associated Druids or Egyptians or Roman cultic groups and that the church simply co-opted them. This morning, out of curiosity, I began researching the origin of the Christmas tree. I learned some surprising things. It is true that...
Friday afternoon was an excellent time for the Lady Pioneers, winning 61-28, to work on the little things as a team. The girls came out with a strong press, making the Valier Panthers struggle to get the ball down the court and set up an offense. The Lady Pioneers had great ball pressure with high hands, making the Lady Panthers make quick decisions, leading to several turnovers that Big Sandy capitalized on. Jai Baumann had some great fast-break layups from the Valier turnovers in the...
Friday night was all Big Sandy Pioneers with a win of 74-23. While the boys came out strong against Valier Panthers, Valier showed some promise in defense and ball pressure. Still, Big Sandy prevailed by breaking that defense with great ball movement and penetration to the basket for some easy buckets. The Pioneers pushed the ball up the floor and had some great passes. Isaac Pedraza, a senior and new Pioneer, had some great drives and buckets. Kody Strutz making his way back onto the floor...
The Big Sandy Pioneers placed five wrestlers in Glasgow this past weekend. The Scottie Invitational is one of the biggest tournaments that the team will compete in this season. Teams from all over the central and eastern part of the state were there to battle it out on the mats. Perennial powerhouse Sidney was present as well as other tough teams from around the region. 8th grader Quinn Rodewald competed well in his first high school tournament. The Pioneer 103 pound wrestler went 3-2 en route t...
