  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Dec 16, 2020

This article was written by Dennis Cash, retired MSU Extension Service forage specialist. The winter feeding is likely your single largest ranch expense. Reducing hay waste can save you money. Hay losses at feeding on most ranches averages about one fourth, but can easily approach half. During good haying conditions and with proper storage, most losses to alfalfa or alfalfa-grass hays can be minimized. Dense large round or rectangular bales are widely used, but significant losses occur when these are stacked in the open. Hay sheds and tarps...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Dec 16, 2020

When I was in college, I had a comic strip hanging up in my dorm room. The single panel was from the nationally syndicated “Pluggers” comic. The text of the comic was simple: “An ounce of work is worth a pound of meetings.” I have long held this opinion and think back to the motto often. The fact of the matter is that 10 minutes of work will generally outproduce hours worth of meetings. This morning, I have found myself reflecting on this idea and applying it to a different subject altogether. In the past few weeks, I have had several people...

  • Pioneer Jr. High boys move from mat to court

    Sean Janssen|Dec 16, 2020

Raw talent more accustomed to rubber mats than a rubber ball refined its way to a respectable season on the hardwood in junior high boys’ basketball at Big Sandy. First-year coach Katie Nicholson led a team loaded with athleticism that finished just shy of .500 ball despite little experience in the game. With Little Guy wrestling postponed until after the New Year, the hoops team took shape in the form of a lot of wrestlers keeping in shape for that sport. “This is just a group of kids who are just really good athletes,:” Nicholson said. “Our...

  • JH Pioneer girls flex on court

    Sean Janssen|Dec 16, 2020

It took a fair amount of scheduling gymnastics to permit Big Sandy to complete a full junior high girls basketball season in 2020. The Pioneers proved able to defeat nearly every opponent they faced, COVID-19 included. The pandemic forced last-minute cancelations left and right but the purple and gold chased down games wherever they could be found. “(Athletic Director) Melanie Schwarzbach did an amazing job getting us games for a (full) season,” Pioneers coach Travis Baumann said. “Parents were great about it … nobody wanted a six-game junior h...

  • Reminiscent of Christmas past

    Jeremiah Genereux|Dec 16, 2020

When I think about Christmases I have had previously throughout my lifetime, I think about many different things. I think about where they were held, who was all there and of course what I got for the special holiday. What always really sticks out to me every time out of all of it is one singular moment. This moment was very integral as I learned two valuable lessons that Christmas in 2010; As everyone was being given their gifts in the living room of Grandma and Grandpa Genereux, a feeling of...

  • Ice recreation season is beginning, anglers and others encouraged to practice safety

    Dec 16, 2020

GLASGOW- It's that time of year when ice anglers and other recreationists will be heading out to Montana's "hard" waters for the winter season. Everyone needs to be safe around ice, whether ice fishing, ice skating, hunting, snowmobiling, or just taking a walk. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reminds folks that safety should be the number one concern during a day out on (or near) the ice. And when on the ice, remember: • Anglers and other recreationists should be familiar with the water body t...

  • 229 years ago, America became . . . America

    Ken Paulson|Dec 16, 2020

Today marks a hidden holiday, as uncelebrated as it is unappreciated. It was 229 years ago today that the United States ratified the Bill of Rights, ensuring unprecedented freedom for the people of an emerging nation. Bill of Rights Day has actually been a national holiday since Nov. 28, 1941 when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designated Dec. 15 “Bill of Rights Day.” Roosevelt had big plans, envisioning flag-flying and ceremonies nationwide. Roosevelt observed that Adolph Hitler feared “our freedom of speech, press and religion.” Unfortu...
